October 30, 2013

Dear School Parent,

During morning prayer, in addition to our regular student prayers, the school recites a specific chosen prayer together throughout the entire month.  The month of October is "The Guardian Angel" prayer.  Next month, students will learn the "Eternal Rest" prayer and recite it together throughout November.  By the end of the school year, students should have memorized a number of prayers that are part of the Catholic faith.  It might be worthwhile to review these prayers with your child(ren) at home, too.  Just ask them to share what they've learned!

Tomorrow I look forward to a colorful day of creative celebration.  On Friday, November 1 at 9:00 a.m., feel free to join us at our all-school Mass in church, as we honor all the saints who guide us as we continue to grow and strengthen as a community of faith-filled people.

Sincerely,

Margaret Hayes

Principal

And the Walk Goes On . . .

We hope the students enjoyed walking for St. Cletus School on October 18th.  The Sixth Grade would like to thank all the parents, teachers and students who made the event run so smoothly.

Special congratulations and thanks go to Mrs. Rotunno's 8th grade class, Ms. Lewandowki's 4th grade class, and Mrs. Barber's 2nd grade class.  These classes have already earned two "Out-of-Uniform Days" for meeting their class goals ($50 per student) for the Walk-a-Thon.  Other classes that are close to meeting their goals include Mrs. Walton's Pre-K class ($20 short), Mrs. McNamara's 6th grade class ($70 short), Mrs. Bentley's Kindergarten class ($70 short), and Mrs. Mahr's Kindergarten class ($110 short).

And, it's still not over.  Students have until November 1 to turn in their pledge sheets and donations to qualify for over 35 fabulous raffle prizes!  Every student who meets his/her individual fundraising goal of $50 will earn a raffle ticket and an additional raffle ticket for every additional $25 raised.  Raffle prizes include:

Four 200-level tickets to Blackhawks/Oilers game on Nov. 10

                      Kindle Fire

                      Tubus Portable Speaker System

Two Lucky Strike bowling parties for 8 bowlers

Two Ceramic Art Café ceramic painting parties for 4 painters

Tickets for 4 to Chicago Skydeck

Certificate for Free Batting Cage rental and Tervis Tumbler

Lume's Pancake House, Target, AMC, Sports Authority, Best Buy,

                       Disney and more!!

In addition, the top two individual fundraisers in each grade will have the opportunity to play Uno during lunch with Ms. Hayes and/or Mrs. Hillgoth.  Also, any class with 100% participation will be treated to an ice cream treat, compliments of Ms. Hayes and Mrs. Hillgoth.

Remember, the grade level that meets the highest percent of its goal wins a pizza party for the entire grade.  The current front-runners are 2nd grade (90%), Kindergarten (87%), 4th Grade (78%), 3rd Grade (73%), and 6th Grade (72%).

So keep those pledges coming in--the deadline is this Friday, November 1.  Forms can be found on-line at Walk-a-Thon Pledge Forms.

Raffle winners will be announced on Monday, November 4th.  Thank you for your support!

Speech Contest Results

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported and encouraged our students to participate in the speech contest.  We were very proud of them, as they all gave their best effort.

There were 8 schools with over 160 students participating. As a school team, we PLACED FIRST again!  We had 9 students out of 32 who placed individually:

          Declamation: Andy Schramka, 4th place

Dramatic Performance: Pilar Valdes, 1st place; Maddie Walsh, 3rd place

Original Oratory: Christian Davila, 1st place; Lauren Decker, 3rd place

Poetry: McKenna Doyle, 2nd place; Kelly Grace, 4th place; Grace Luxem,

                        4th place

Prose: Katie Hart, 2nd place; Danielle Dahill, 3rd place

A BIG THANKS goes to all our parents who served as judges and gave up their Saturday morning: Becky Burens, Jim Doherty, Karen Habercross, Dave Kelly, and Mary Therese Luxem.  All of our students have benefitted from this experience. They couldn't have done it without your help!

Another BIG THANKS goes to Mary Jo Ramicone, Liz Valdes, and Gina McAndrew, who co-chaired the contest.  These three wonderful volunteers worked tirelessly with the students, helping them fine-tune their speech skills and instill confidence in them to produce these winning results.  Great work!

Halloween--Pre-K Through 8th Grades

Halloween is always a time for great fun.  For the past few years, all of us at St. Cletus have been dressing up for Halloween in a fun costume.  This year we will celebrate at the school on Thursday, October 31, with parties and costumes.  Please follow the guidelines below, and, students, come dressed for the day in your costumes:

  • Pre-school students: please follow the guidelines and information sent home by your pre-school teachers.
  • Costumes must be comfortable for all-day wearing--learning continues throughout the day.
  • Leave all props at home: wands, gloves, brooms, whistles, etc.
  • No masks, please--they can block vision.  Try makeup instead.  Remember, the children will be wearing this makeup all day.
  • Wear comfortable shoes--gym shoes are preferred.  We will still have gym class and recess.
  • Costumes must be school appropriate--NO violent or gory costumes, such as Freddy, Jason, etc.  However, skeletons, witches, Dracula, etc. are fine.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.  This should be a "spooky day" for all.  HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Athletics

Attention Parents of All Fall Athletes

Please complete this Coach Evaluation Survey for the past fall season.  If your child participated in more than one sport, please fill out the survey twice (e.g., once for volleyball and once for cheerleading).  You do not need to fill it out more than once for head and assistant coaches.  Please list your coaches' names in the space provided and use the comments section to write any specific feedback towards a particular coach.  If you would like to fill out an entirely separate survey for an assistant coach, that would be fine as well.  You do not have to submit your name on this survey; it can be done anonymously.  The survey will close on Friday, November 8.

Equipment return will be Saturday, November 2, in Morrissey Hall.
