You get the most cardio benefits when exercising at an intensity that keeps you in your target zone – at about 70 to 80 percent of your max heart rate – but there's not much danger in being 10 beats per minute or so over. Keep in mind, though, that the handgrips on ellipticals used to take pulse readings are notoriously inaccurate.
