Celebrating ASDA volunteers

Hundreds of dental students across the country contribute to ASDA's ongoing success. Whether you're a national or chapter leader, your idea, action and participation has made a difference in our organization. In honor of National Volunteer Week, ASDA central office staff would like to thank you for all that you do! Consider passing on your appreciation to students who volunteer at your chapter.

ASDA's central office staff in Chicago says "thank you."

Grant opportunity available for chapters

Chapters can apply for one of five $500 Membership Outreach Grants to help fund local events that promote membership and involvement in ASDA. Chapters must demonstrate the need for the grant and describe what the funds will be used for. Full criteria and application requirements are available online. Applications are due May 31 and events must be held by Dec. 31, 2014. The grants will be awarded in July so funds can be used for fall membership activities. If you have questions, contact Danielle Bauer, director of membership, at Danielle@ASDAnet.org.

Training on new chapter portal

ASDA staff will provide a live demo of the new online chapter portal that allows chapters to manage their members' data, view and download membership rosters, update chapter officers and send e-communications to members. Maintaining accurate data and opening paths of communication are the basis of running a successful chapter.

Register now for the demo that will take place on Wednesday, April 23 at 7 p.m. CST.

"Great Ideas" webinar presenters needed

ASDA will host an hour-long "Great Ideas Webinar" in August. This free virtual idea exchange will feature ASDA members from several schools sharing best practices and innovative ideas related to running their chapters. This will be a great opportunity to connect with students from different dental schools to learn new ways of motivating your members, hosting events and more.

If you'd like to present your great idea during this webinar, e-mail Danielle Bauer, director of membership, at Danielle@ASDAnet.org with a brief description of your idea and the results it achieved by June 1. Ideas should fall into one of the following categories:

  • Leadership development, training and transitions
  • Member communications
  • Membership recruitment, engagement and retention
  • Predental recruitment and involvement
  • Chapter activities and fundraising
  • Advocacy - getting members involved

The Council on Membership will review the submissions and select up to five panelists for the webinar by June 30. Details on how to register for this free webinar will be available in July.

Resolutions adopted at 2014 House of Delegates

At Annual Session held in Anaheim last month, the House of Delegates considered resolutions on topics such as student debt, needle stick issues, special needs dentistry and diversity. The House approved a new student debt policy, updates to the bylaws and standing rules of the association and changes to our E-4 policy. View the adopted resolutions at ASDAnet.org/adoptedresolutions.aspx.

Membership progress for 2014 year

ASDA has received membership payment from most chapters. Membership market share for predoctoral members is currently 76 percent. We expect to meet or exceed last year's market share of 89 percent by Aug. 31, when the membership year ends. Predental membership is up by almost 60 percent from last year, thanks to the recruitment effort of many of our chapters. Questions regarding your chapter's membership totals can be directed to Erin Kato, membership relations specialist, at Erin@ASDAnet.org.

Membership FAQs

I am graduating from dental school in May. What happens with my ASDA and ADA membership?

ASDA membership runs on a calendar year, so you will be a predoctoral member of ASDA until Dec. 31, 2014. This means, you are still eligible for the full benefits of ASDA, including free life and disability insurance and our publications. Be sure to update your contact information with ASDA so you can continue to receive your benefits.

ADA membership also runs on a calendar year so your student membership does not expire until Dec. 31. However, now is the time to start planning your conversion from student to active ADA membership. You have several options, depending on your next step after graduation: 1) graduate student membership if you are going into a graduate program or residency; 2) tripartite membership through your state society, if you will be an associate, starting a practice, or faculty of a dental school; 3) federal dental service membership for those going into the armed forces or becoming a federal employee; and 4) provisional membership if you have graduated but haven't started a professional career yet. All categories have reduced rates. For details, visit www.ada.org/goto/join.
