6 simple ways... to baby step into your New Year's resolution

Year after year we set goals for personal improvement without completely understanding what lasting change needs. Here are tips to help you begin to transform without inciting panic.

  1. Write down your resolutions/goals (personal and professional). They should be measurable and doable in realistic timeframes. Keep them somewhere you will see them often like your daily planner or in your smartphone.
  2. Don't let time slip by. Auld Lang Syne literally translates to "old long since." Make plans with an old friend or someone you've been meaning to get to know better. Having a solid support system can encourage you to achieve your goals.
  3. Reflect. Different feelings may be associated with different resolutions: excitement, frustration, maybe even regret. Let the past motivate you.
  4. Stay curious about your future and the world around you. Remind yourself that nothing's set in stone. You're surrounded by possibilities. Let your efforts lead you and be flexible. Goals can change and you may find opportunities you never thought possible.
  5. Don't let the weight on your shoulders slow you down. You can be more effective if you live in day-tight compartments. Read "How to Stop Worrying and Start Living" by Dale Carnegie for some helpful advice on how to do this.
  6. Put both feet forward. Every step is something to celebrate. Even if it feels like you're walking in place, staying resolute will prove lessons were learned along the way. Once you've achieved one goal, set another. You might just see a productive year before you!
