Connecting the dots to ASDA leadership

By Jiwon Lee, Columbia '14

Not only did the man push forward music, technology and animation, Steve Jobs is also responsible for some of my favorite quotes. To the graduating class of 2005 at Stanford, he said, "You can't connect the dots looking forward, you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future." He then correlates this story with a depressing time in his life when he was fired from his own company and then 'wastes' his time by taking a calligraphy class, which later influences the innovative new fonts Apple would be known for.

I was deeply inspired by this quote. It was one of the tenets that gave myself permission to pursue broadcast journalism, then teaching, then dental school. Many people (including my parents) were baffled by the seemingly random pattern of my work life. However, as I continue on in my organized dentistry journey, the random dots keep connecting.

I use my communication background for ASDA everyday to keep other associations and written publications informed. Conveying algebra to seventh graders directly translated in the ability to explain complex issues simply and clearly-an important piece in helping ASDA advocate efficiently. I know patients appreciate it as well when I can describe a complicated procedure or disease process to them in everyday lingo.

Off the resume path, I have always tried to better myself as a compassionate person and strong leader. This included being actively involved in community service organizations (including Do Random Acts of Kindness at University of Michigan), finding mentors and reading about ways to improve. One thing that most propelled me to run for ASDA president was the dream of encouraging and helping new leaders on their path to professional and personal greatness. I am thrilled to incorporate new leadership training into the board of trustees meetings and continue the bright path of our annual National Leadership Conference. I know that at the end of my term as president, I will measure my success by how many new leaders I supported and propelled forward.

It is extremely gratifying to feel that my life experiences and strengths are now being utilized to help patients and my fellow dental students. I am exhilarated by the chance to advance the association with the rest of this year's dream team Executive Committee: Executive Director Nancy Honeycutt, CAE; Vice President Tyler Rumple, Washington '14; and Vice President Martin Smallidge, Pittsburgh '14. We will work together this year with one major light guiding us to shore: the good of the association.
