Leader Update
News for the leaders of the American Student Dental Association
January 2013
New year, new look for The Leader
We have refreshed the look of The Leader, the monthly e-newsletter sent to national and chapter leaders, to make it more visually appealing and user-friendly. In addition to the visual changes, we have added resources and deadlines in the right column to help you better manage your chapters. We hope you find the changes beneficial.
Annual Session registration deadline is Jan. 25
The board of trustees urges your chapter to send three or more students to Annual Session, March 6-9 in Atlanta, in order to be adequately represented and to fully benefit from the training and information offered at the event. Register attendees from your chapter by Friday, Jan. 25 to avoid a $25 late fee per person. Go to www.ASDAnet.org/AnnualSession for details. The Gold Crown Award ceremony will take place at Annual Session. Make sure your chapter submits all applications by Jan. 31, 2013. Criteria and submission instructions are available online at ASDAnet.org/awards/gc.
Submit resolutions for board review by Jan. 15

If you've got an idea for something ASDA could or should be doing for its members, consider writing a resolution that will create or update association policy. If you or someone from your chapter has an idea for a resolution, contact your trustee or Speaker of the House Jiwon Lee at Speaker@ASDAnet.org for help. Resolutions submitted by Jan. 15 will be reviewed by the board of trustees - this is the recommended process as the board can provide feedback to improve your resolution before it goes to the House. Resolutions received after the deadline will be assigned to a reference committee onsite. For resolution-writing resources, including a template, click here.

Earn money for your chapter through the ASDA e-mail drive

ASDA's annual information drive has begun. We have made changes to the program this year to make it easier for chapters to earn money, you simply have to collect members' e-mails. E-mail is the main way ASDA benefits and opportunities are delivered to members. A spreadsheet will be sent to all first and second delegates during the week of Feb. 4 for you to capture the missing e-mails addresses from your members. For each graduating class with 100% of e-mails collected, your chapter will receive $25. Chapters who submit e-mails for their entire membership will be entered into a raffle for $500! Remind your members what they are missing out on if they do not provide their e-mail:

  • E-newsletters with resources and updates about the dental profession
  • Member benefit-related discounts
  • ASDA/ADA member number
  • Call for leadership opportunities or national event invitations
  • Scholarships, awards and grant opportunities
  • ASDA and ADA association news

Note: Chapters who submitted 100% of member e-mails during the remittance period will be automatically entered into the drawing for $500. If you have questions, contact Erin Kato, member relations specialist, at Erin@ASDAnet.org.

ASDA scrubs fundraising opportunity

ASDA is working with Career Uniforms to offer chapters a scrubs fundraising program. Chapters can visit the new website at www.promoplace.com/35951/store/asda to view the products offered and order online. Scrubs and lab coats can be embroidered with chapter logos for a nominal fee. For additional fundraising ideas, download the how-to guides on fundraising and vendor fairs.

Chapters that owe remittances: your students are not current members!

If ASDA central office has not received your chapter's remittances, including full payment, the students at your chapter are NOT current ASDA members and therefore will not receive their benefits. As of Jan. 8, 2013, the following chapters have not remitted or paid so their students are not current ASDA members: Arizona, Boston, Buffalo, Case Western, East Carolina, Illinois, Louisville, Maryland, Michigan, Midwestern-Illinois, Missouri, Nova, Puerto Rico, Southern Illinois, Stony Brook and Temple. In order to avoid complaints from members at your school, it is urgent that your chapter submits the remittance with full payment as soon as possible. If you have any questions about the remittance process, contact Erin Kato, member relations specialist, at Erin@ASDAnet.org.

2013 membership update

As of Dec. 31, 2012, there are 13,784 members, including 13,456 predoctoral, 319 predental and 9 international dental student members. If you have any questions regarding your chapter's membership totals, contact Erin Kato, member relations specialist, at Erin@ASDAnet.org.
