ASDA launches a donor program

ASDA has created a program where former ASDA members, dental school deans and faculty, and colleagues within organized dentistry can contribute to the association. All monetary donations will be put towards ASDA operational costs and educational programs for its dental student members. Each contributor will receive an ASDA lapel pin as well as recognition on the website and in ASDA News. Please share information on this new program with your dean, faculty and other supporters in organized dentistry. Donations can be submitted online at www.ASDAnet.org/donate/.

ADAF offers grants for domestic and international dental student service

Dental student groups are invited to submit applications for the Bud Tarrson Dental School Community Leadership Award or the Dr. Thomas J. Zwemer Award by Nov. 26. The Tarrson highlights significant dental student outreach to vulnerable communities within the United States. The Zwemer Award recognizes student programs that provide services to underserved populations in international communities outside of the United States. Each award provides $5,000 to a dental school in honor of the winning student outreach program.

ADA-sponsored insurance: no cost to your members and $500 for your chapter

Help your chapter members prepare for a smart financial future with personal insurance sponsored by the ADA! When they take advantage by signing up for both ADA-sponsored life and disability insurance at no cost to them, you can earn cash for your chapter. ASDA and ADA student members sign up online to activate their coverage immediately - the cost, about $125 per year, is completely subsidized by ADA Insurance Plans through dental school and residency.

When 80 percent or more of members enroll in both insurance plans, your chapter will qualify for $500. To aid your efforts, your 2012-13 ADA insurance enrollment kit includes bright orange wristbands to help students remember to sign up. Have some fun by challenging them to wear the bands until they've enrolled in both plans. Talk about this important member benefit and send e-mail reminders with the link to sign up online. To track your chapter's progress or get more information, contact  Leslie Franklin with Great-West Life & Annuity Insurance Company.

Group Policy Nos. (104TLP Term Life and 1108GDH-SDP Student Disability) issued to the American Dental Association; insured by Great-West Life & Annuity Insurance Company.

New ASDA scrub fundraiser

ASDA is working with Career Uniforms to offer a discount on scrubs, lab coats, stethoscopes, etc. so that chapters can sell them as a fundraiser. There will be a website set up for ASDA chapters in November. In the mean time, you can review the pricing, order form and instructions. To view any of the products, you can visit their website at www.careeruniforms.com.

ADA freshman welcome drive a huge success

The ADA Freshman Welcome Drive of 2012 had more than five times the participation of 2011! Forty ASDA chapters collected at least 95 percent of their first-year student contact information and will receive $225 from the ADA. ASDA leaders play a critical role in the success of this program. Thank you for all your efforts! Stay tuned for another opportunity in early 2013 to earn money for your chapter and promote organized dentistry with the ADA Conversion Drive. Please contact the ADA Office of Student Affairs with any questions.

2013 membership update

On Sept. 12, ASDA opened the 2013 membership year. To date, we have 939 members, including 845 predoctoral, 89 predental and 5 international dental students. Congratulations to Oklahoma and Loma Linda for submitting their membership remittances by the deadline and earning the incentive!
