Board Minute
Greetings Port Townsend Community and beyond. This is Connie Segal writing as a new Main Street Board Member since January of this year. I knew that after living in Port Townsend for 10 years and owning my own business, that it was time to participate in some way and volunteer to share in a civic duty. I had no idea how much fun it would be! My idea as a Board Member is to put "wellness" on our tag line: "Welcome to Port Townsend, The Victorian Seaport, Art and Wellness Community."
I was able to go to the "Washington Tourist Alliance Summit" in Olympia. We visited our State Capitol and met with Senator Hargrove, State Representative Kevin Van De Wege and Representative Steve Tharinger. In our sessions we learned about how important tourism is to our communities. Tourism in the United States is a multi-billion dollar industry, attracting visitors from all over the world. Visitors stay in our lodgings, eat at our restaurants, shop, get spa services, visit our state parks, buy gas, rent cars and much more. And Port Townsend is no slouch when it comes to attractions.
I attended the statewide annual "Main Street Conference" in Bellingham May 6-8, with fellow board member Xoe Huffman and staff Mari Mullen. I learned how important Main Street Programs are to our communities across the country. I am pleased to know that people are so passionate about the revitalization of historic downtowns, which, in turn, fosters local economy and local pride.
It's Steampunk weekend, so don your cool attire and come out and play. We love to dress up in PT! Also, if you haven't been to Soak on the Sound, they are celebrating their one-year anniversary this Sunday, May 31st, 7:00pm to midnight. Please contact them for details.

TIPS & CLICKS!
Summer & Sunscreen by Connie Segal
Summer is nearly here and that means more outdoor activities. In my profession as an esthetician, one who deals with the skin, skin health is important. I have always resisted sun screen because of the weird chemicals. After experiencing minor skin cancer and surgery, I am now advocating sun screen. The good thing is that there are much healthier products on the market. You can find healthy sunscreens locally at Uptown Nutrition, Face of Grace, the Food Co-op and Glow Natural Skin Care. Of course, wearing a hat and a lightweight long- sleeved shirt, and staying out of the sun during peak hours 11:00-3:00 are good ideas.
