Meet Beverly

Board Minute by Beverly Malagon

This is my second year as a Main Street Board Member and have worked on the Design Committee for several years. I have owned the Kuhn Building at Water and Polk Streets for 11 years and I'm very interested in the goals of our town's merchants and restaurants as well as my tenants. The Kuhn Building is home to 3 merchants, 2 restaurants, 3 local artist studios, a dance studio and offices.

To support the arts, our Main Street Program coordinates Art Wave--Children's art in the stores and related fundraising events. We hire musicians for Concerts on the Dock, and help sponsor the Uptown Street Fair and PT Film Fest. The Main Street holiday promotion cross-promotes community arts events. I of course support the talented artists on my second floor: Ling Hui Dance Studio, Don Tiller acrylic artist, teacher Susan Faust (a multi-disciplinary artist), and Jean Meyer, a local artist who shows in Portland and Kirkland. I enjoy my relationships with all Main Street members and our hard-working staff. My volunteering with Main Street is both socially and economically rewarding, I recommend it.

Clicks and Tips:
The Creative Economy and The Arts

Did you know that Port Townsend has one of the top 3 scores in Washington for the Creative Vitality Index (CVI) after King County and San Juan Island? And what does this mean? Click here to read about the Creative Economy from the ArtsWA webpage. Scroll down for the featured PT Leader article. To learn more about the CVI study--Click here.

The Port Townsend Main Street Program worked with the Jefferson County Community Foundation and community partners to explore the impact of the arts in Jefferson County.

Arts supporters are invited to a Regional Arts Forum at the Colab on May 5th from 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm.  Special guests include Karen Hanan, ArtsWA director and staff to continue the discussion on the creative economy in Jefferson County.

MAY IS ART WAVE!

a sweet Art Wave display
May 1-31, Art Wave--an inspiring exhibit of over 400 pieces of children's artwork created in the Port Townsend School District in grades K-12 displayed through the month of May in 33 businesses in Uptown and Downtown. Come to the historic districts for Art Walk on May 2 and see the creativity of our children.

More Ways You Can Help Support Arts In The PT School District:
  • PT Artscape Donation Jars in select stores; all proceeds will go directly to art education programs in the Port Townsend School District.

  • Daily Bird Pottery will also contribute again this year. Sales of "Daily Birds" in May will benefit the Arts in the Schools Program.
  • The Port Townsend Food Co-op is letting PT Artscape have a jar in its "Beans for Bags" Program in May and June. Receive a bean when you bring your own shopping bag, and vote for PT Artscape by putting your bean in the PT Artscape Jar. For every bean collected, the Food Co-op will donate 5 cents to PT Artscape, and every penny counts!

Proceeds from these activities help support diverse offerings by PT Artscape including the Teaching Artists Programs in Grant Street School, Blue Heron Middle School, Port Townsend High School, and professional development for teaching artists and classroom teachers. PT Artscape also supports Centrum's Tales, Texts and Theater Program for the sixth grade, as well as special projects and materials.

Kitsap Bank's "edg3 FUND" has been selected as a finalist for two awards in the MARKETING NW Awards competition! edg3 FUND's mission is to provide funding for entrepreneurs dedicated to growing our community economically, socially or environmentally. They are up for BEST PRIVATE-SECTOR PROJECT: Project for private corporation, and BEST BRAND LOGO: Identity for commercial product/event. It is now up to the public to vote for their favorite entry in each category. Voting deadline April 30.
They hope you will cast your vote for them (option A) in both categories. Spread the word!
