March 2015

Board Minute!

Howdy from your Port Townsend Main Street Board!
Paul Rice, Port Townsend
 Main Street Program V.P.

We're brainstorming better ways to serve our historic districts on the (Main Street board), but we need your help! We have several committees that could use your guidance as an active citizen who appreciates our city. Composed from our vast army of cool and talented people, these committees typically meet once a month. It's a great chance to do some networking, and to have fun while helping implement Port Townsend Main Street's strategic vision for a vibrant and economically splendiforous city! If you're interested in helping us make our Historic Uptown/Downtown the best they can be, you should consider joining us on a committee. Talk to a board member, or to Mari Mullen, our illustrious Executive Director, about which committee would be right for you.

You know what's at the end of that spring rainbow? A pot o' beer! That's right, we're doing another St. Patrick's Day Pub Crawl! Tickets are at the low low price of $5 per bracelet, and that includes a complimentary souvenir glass, plus very special St. Patty Day-themed drink and food specials at the participating establishments.

Also back by popular demand is our "Insiders Historic Building Tours", a part of the Victorian Festival on March 22, you will get a chance to go behind the frontage of many of our historic downtown buildings. This sold out last year so you better get your tickets NOW! Head to vicfest.org for your chance to explore our history in person!

Thanks for living in the best, most historical town in the Pacific Northwest! We at Port Townsend Main Street are here to serve you, so if you have any thoughts, questions, ideas, or potential collaborations, please email us at director@ptmainstreet.org

NEW--Tips & Clicks

If you're a small business owner, I bet you're often in the business of putting things off! It's a matter of necessity sometimes. We rob Peter to pay Paul (no relation), in the hopes that someday we can pay it all back and live rich and glowing, upon a mountain of dimes (or whatever). We think we're being frugal and smart, and sometimes we are, but sometimes we're totally blowing it.

The Pinbar had a plumbing disaster recently, one that I could sense coming, but put off until it forced me to close for three days.

And if it weren't for the help of some friends, the tacit understanding of our staff, and a little borrowed capital, we would have shut down forever.

The problem could have been solved if I had confronted it when I knew it was becoming an issue. If I had tackled it head on instead of waiting for things to get worse, business wouldn't have skipped a beat. (Of course, if I hadn't opened a business in the first place, I'd still have money and my sanity!).

So apply this advice how you will, just remember that the price of putting things off may cost you your business. Click on these tips for some important reminders.
