Greetings!

September is all about change - the days are shorter and cooler, school begins and schedules fill up. The lazy summer months are fading into precious memories...

For women and children escaping abuse, the changes are especially significant! New schools, new addresses and because of your unwavering support - new beginnings.

We are delighted to share with you our recent activities made possible by your generosity. Every gift you give has an immediate and inspiring impact and helps a family live free from violence and fear. Thank you for keeping the families of The Redwood close to your heart.

You give moms the confidence to start afresh
null Kids are not the only ones going back to school.

Because of your commitment, moms are returning to school
and pursuing diplomas and degrees.

Violence in the home can prevent women from attending post-secondary schools and following career goals. For Monique, dreams of pursing a degree seemed like a distant reality. Haunted by her husband's critical words, she did not have the confidence to believe in her skills and intelligence.

Inspired by you and The Redwood counsellors, Monique began to realize her potential. Read how you helped her go back to school in our latest Fall Newsletter (PDF).

Indian Kiss gives kids a jump start for the school year
null Starting a new school is uncertain for any child but imagine if you are living in a shelter as well!

How do you tell new friends that you don't have a home or that you have nightmares about the yelling and punches you have seen or felt?

Thanks to Jessi and Ranjan of Indian Kiss and their generous customers, the stress of back-to-school jitters was eased. Every child received a bright new backpack complete with sparkly pens and pencils, paper and calculators.

Summer programs help kids heal from abuse
null
Moms and kids living at The Redwood had the chance to feel the magic and joy of summer.

Thanks to your caring support, days were spent flying kites at High Park, splashing in pools at Wild Water Kingdom and eating popcorn at the movies.

Your commitment helped families begin to forget about the abuse they have experienced and start to heal. They now have memories to last a lifetime.

Emma celebrates 10 years with The Redwood!

Remember the blackout of August 2003?

Emma Lewzey will never forget it! The interview for The Redwood's Fundraising Manager took place in a darkened and very warm room on the afternoon of August 14th. Taking it all in stride, Emma knew from the beginning that this was the organization where she wanted to make a difference.

The best part of the past 10 years? Emma smiles: "Fundraising gives me the opportunity to meet with so many committed and dedicated volunteers, staff and community donors - it's a real privilege to work with like-minded individuals who are making our shelter and our community a better world!"

Always leading by example, Emma signed up to be one of The Redwood's first monthly donors. When she included The Redwood in her will, she felt that this decision truly reflected her values, her family and what matters to her the most - making an investment in the lives of woman and children who have found the strength to leave violence behind and start over.

Congratulations Emma on ten remarkable years! To join Emma and become a member of the Safe Haven Monthly Giving Program, please visit our website for more information - www.theredwood.com

The holidays can be stressful and heartbreaking for a mom who has no money to buy her child a present.

Every year, you, our amazing donors, help make the holiday season a happier time for more than 200 women and children fleeing violence by giving thoughtful and generous gifts.

This year, The Redwood is launching a new Safe Haven Store. Here, you can easily purchase gifts that are highly desired by moms and children. It's the only place you can get #1 on a kid's wish list! Beyond a wrapped up gift or special experience, your gift from the Safe Haven Store will give moms and children the chance to heal and start again, free from constant fear and threats.

The gifts you give can change lives. Shop from the Safe Haven Store this coming holiday season.
