We've been following the reports regarding Adrian Peterson, running back for the Minnesota Vikings NFL football team, and charges of child abuse. Along with everyone else, we are very upset  at  the extent of the injuries inflicted by Mr. Peterson. However, the response in the media has made us uncomfortable because everyone seems to focus on how long the NFL should suspend Peterson and other players involved in domestic violence situations and whether the League has been too easy on these players.

This is a legitimate concern but we keep wondering, in addition to punishment, don't these players and their families also need help? Why hasn't anyone proposed a treatment program as part of the NFL's response? Maybe these players want help.

When parents who have hurt their children come to our groups, they feel embarrassed and ashamed. They want to stop and they are frank that they need help stopping. That's why they come to group. That's why they call the Parental Stress Line.

We don't know Adrian Peterson, of course, but maybe the national conversation should focus more on how we can help rather than the severity of the punishment.  My guess is that Adrian Peterson's son would far prefer that than having his father vilified and deprived of making a living at football.
