  Patents

Last month we discussed personnel, this month we want to discuss patents.

Proprietary rights are often a list of trade names, trademarks, logos, copyrights, industrial designs and patents should be obtained, noting the period of time remaining before each expires.

Next month we will discuss taxes.

In the meantime, if you would like more information on buying a business, contact us at 204-478-7266x110.

What Do You Want to Do Next?
Last month we discussed training your successor.  This month we will focus on what do you want to do next.

Over the past year, we have discussed topics ranging from preparing to sell your business to training your successor. The final step is up to you - what do you want to do next?

Some people dream of retiring to a warmer climate (after our long winter here in Manitoba, who can blame them?) Others are looking to travel, or spend more time with their family. Whatever your goals are, make sure you plan for them - don't just assume you will enjoy retirement because you don't have the stresses of the 9-5 grind any more. One question I ask business buyers "What would you do for the rest of your life assuming money is no object?" Hopefully, if you planned your finances carefully, as you sell your business, you are financially "set." But are you "set" emotionally?

Retirement, like any major life change, can be stressful. I meet business owners every day who would like to retire, but are basically afraid - afraid of having nothing to do, of being bored, or just afraid of the unknown. But if you plan your retirement, and ease in to it, it can be a wonderful time of giving back, of travel, and of catching up on all those things you never had time for before.

I am Starting a New Business, How do I Decide the Selling Price for my Product or Service?

Finding an appropriate selling price is one of the most difficult hurdles a new business owner will face.  A price will reflect how you plan to position your product and the market you are looking to capture.

Here are a few things to keep in mind.

What does your price say about you?

  • A high price will help position your product or service in a specialty or niche market.  This will cause price conscious buyers to look elsewhere.
  • A high price also conveys a quality product or service.  Pricing too low may reflect the opposite.  You need to find a price that reflects the quality and value a customer will get when using your product or service.
  • Start-up businesses frequently under price their products, while tempting to be the lowest price, make sure you understand the full costs that are included in your product or service, such as shipping and rent and the value of your own time.
  • Maintaining a healthy margin is the only way to achieve profitability.
