Bass Creek Field Trip

Nature writing at Bass Creek, led by English teacher Lorilee Evans-Lynn and MWC writer Robert Lee, sent Big Sky High School students out of town, into the woods, and around the campfire. Another outdoor collaboration with Fred Haefele's students at C.S. Porter and naturalists with the Watershed Education Network will begin in May.

Writers at Work and Play

We celebrated Poetry Month with two concurrent workshops, both free.
Writers at Work happened at Buttercup Market on Helen Avenue. Students ages 12-14 worked on extended writing projects, with Jenny White teaching and UM students Micah Fields and Rachel Mindell assisting.

Writing at the Buttercup

Meanwhile, younger writers, ages 8-11, gathered at our new offices at Fort Missoula for classes with Sheryl Noethe, who taught them poetry as well as the art of silent clapping.

 MWC at the MAM

Fourth grade students at Hawthorne, Franklin and Lowell Elementary Schools wrote about the work of Salish artist Corwin Clairmont (left) and then visited the Missoula Art Museum to see the art up close and experiment with Clairmont's techniques.

Thank you to Renee Taaffe and the Missoula Art Museum for including The Missoula Writing Collaborative in this Indian Education for All project.

Big Sky Writers in Our Town

Big Sky High School students (left) explored North Higgins, Railroad Street, and the North Side, then wrote about it.  Sheryl Noethe was the Circle Square Secondhand Store docent, and Gabe Lynn conducted the walking tour.  The excursion included writing at Zootown Community Arts Center.

MWC South

The Missoula Writing Collaborative is a mentor organization for Nica Arts -- an artists-in-the-schools project in Nicaragua started by
MWC resident writer Laurel Nakanishi and
Marina Obregón Alemán, of the Office of Cultural Affairs at the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua (UNAN).   In May, students at Russell Elementary School taught by MWC's Caroline Keys will share their poetry via Skype with students in
El Castillo, Nicaragua.

Nakanishi received her MFA in creative writing from the University of Montana in 2012 and currently is a Fulbright scholar in Nicaragua.
