November  2013
There never seems to be enough time to get everything done.

Organizing is a process; take it one step at a time.

Sincerely,

Tip of the Month:

"The pleasure of doing a thing in the same way at the same time every day, and savoring it, should be noted."

Kids:  School Snacks

snack Many students are asked to bring a snack to school each day.  For parents it means one more thing to remember.....or forget.

Here are three ideas that work well:

1. Keep it Simple:  It is sometimes difficult to find a 'healthy' snack that does not need refrigeration.  Pretzels, graham crackers, animal crackers, granola bars, and raisins are a few options that can be left at room temperature. Prepare individual servings in sandwich or snack bags.

2. Plan Ahead:  Every Friday afternoon, put together a bin filled with enough snacks for the following week.

3. Delegate:  Leave the snack bin near the door.   Delegate responsibility for taking a snack to your child!  It usually takes just one day without snack to have him/her remember daily.

Older children can take responsibility for preparing the snack box each week.  Be sure to keep plenty of items and a wide variety on hand.

Time:  Distractions
Disconnect

I recently heard Tal Ben Shahar, positive psychology expert, share the following:

Having email or Facebook on while trying to work, results in a drop of our IQ by 10 points

This is equivalent to having no sleep for 36 hours

By comparison, smoking pot reduces our IQ by 4 points

Bottom line - disconnecting improves effectiveness.

Home & Office: Email Streamlining
email

An overly wordy email is less likely to be read.

Keep your emails short and sweet with the following tips:

1. Leave white space.  It makes the content easier to read and digest.

2. Say it in as few words as possible.

3. Avoid long, multi-syllabic words that slow down the reading process.

Emails should be edited with the same care as a business letter.  Less is more...and more likely to be read.
