BANGLADESH - According to incoming reports, gunfire between security forces and unidentified assailants has been reported in Bangladesh's capital, Dhaka, on 1 July. At least five assailants are said to have entered the Holey Artisan Bakery located in Dhaka's diplomatic quarter, Gulshan, and taken an unspecified number of patrons and staff hostage. At least three people have been wounded; the motivation for the incident, which remains ongoing, is currently unclear.

The incident highlights the high-risk travel environment in Bangladesh, where both criminally and politically motivated armed groups are known to operate. Heightened security is expected in the affected area in the coming hours, including the cordoning off of additional streets and an increased security force presence. Associated travel disruptions and road closures should be expected in the near-term as the perpetrators are yet to be apprehended.

Clients in Dhaka should avoid the affected area, abide by the directives of the local authorities and monitor local media for updates regarding the situation. Provision should be made for traffic delays in the area.
