UNITED STATES (MARYLAND, D.C., VIRGINIA) - Maryland, D.C. and Virginia have declared states of emergency as the area braces for a major winter storm this weekend. The DOT is prepared with crews, equipment and materials to treat roads in advance of the storm and will work throughout the storm to plow roads. Driving conditions during the storm are expected to be hazardous and motorists are urged to stay off the roads until the storm passes. The National Guard has been authorized to bring up to 500 personnel on state active duty for possible assistance. Total snowfall accumulations are expected to be around 24 to 30 inches of snow.

All modes of transportation are expected to be affected with the potential for widespread destruction and delay. Everyone should take the threat of this storm seriously and take necessary precautions now to ensure they are prepared for travel disruptions and possible power outages during a cold weather period.

Most airlines have issued advisories to warn people that flights to and from the Northeast are at risk of being delayed or canceled. Travelers are advised to contact their travel provider or airline for an update on the status of their flight(s) prior to departure.
