TRAVEL ALERT

Austria, Croatia, Germany, Hungary, Slovenia - Thousands of asylum seekers continue to flow into Europe through border hotspots between Germany, Austria, Hungary and Croatia and Slovenia. States in the region have implemented a number of border controls, including suspending transport services, in order to limit the movement of refugees across the international borders. Transport authorities in Germany announced the suspension of international rail services to Austria and Hungary on 22 September, affecting intercity Line 62 and Railjet Line 90. The restriction is expected to be in place until 4 October. Similarly, authorities in Slovenia have suspended rail services to Croatia for an indefinite period. National operator, Slovenian Railways, has indicated that alternative bus services will be provided for travel between Brezice and Zagreb, Ilirska Bistrica and Rijeka, and Hrpelje Kozina and Pula. The movement of asylum seekers has resulted in severe travel disruptions in several European countries in recent months. Local authorities across the region have struggled to cope with the unprecedented immigration, and several states have taken or are taking steps to secure their borders. It should be noted that rail stations and road transport hubs in border areas are considered to carry an elevated risk of low-level incidents of civil unrest, including skirmishes between asylum seekers and security forces. Due to the ongoing migration crisis, further disruptions to international rail services should be anticipated.

Clients in or planning travel to the aforementioned countries should confirm the status of scheduled transport services with their travel provider prior to travel. Clients are advised to exercise heightened caution and awareness at all rail and road transport hubs and near border crossings. All large gatherings in these areas should be avoided as a precaution.
