THAILAND
(Update) - At least 16 people have been killed, and 81 others wounded, as a result of a bomb attack which occurred in Thailand's capital, Bangkok, on 17 August. The explosion, which was caused by an improvised explosive device attached to a street lamp, occurred near the Erawan Shrine, located at the Ratchaprasong intersection in the city centre. Local reports indicate that two additional devices were found attached to the BTS Skytrain line, however, both were successfully defused. Foreign nationals are thought to be among the casualties, although their nationalities are yet to be confirmed. Emergency operations are ongoing in the affected area and have led to the indefinite closure of the following roads; Ratchadamri Road from the Pratunam intersection to the Sarasin intersection, and Rama I Road from the Ploenjit intersection to the Chaloempao intersection.

The bomb attack is the most severe act of terrorism to affect Thailand in recent times. The motivation for the attack remains unclear at this time and investigations are ongoing. Precedent suggests that an increase in security is possible in public areas across the capital, particularly in and around public transportation hubs, religious shrines and locations popular with tourists. These measures could significantly disrupt business and transportation services across the city.

Clients currently in Bangkok are advised to avoid the impacted area in the short-term, limit travel to crowded public areas and ensure that itineraries are kept flexible to accommodate for travel and business disruptions at this time.
