The Governing Council of the
Virginia Association of Museums 

Welcomes Sarah Whiting
RICHMOND, VIRGINIA - May 28, 2015 -  The Virginia Association of Museums (VAM) recently appointed Sarah Whiting, executive director of St. John's Church Foundation, to its governing council. Whiting will serve as VAM director for specialized audiences. Says Jennifer Thomas, VAM executive director, "Sarah has been an active and engaged VAM member for many years, and I am excited to have her on our Council to share her perspective on and enthusiasm for museums in the Commonwealth."

Since August of 2012, Sarah Whiting has served as executive director of St. John's Church Foundation and is in charge of the historical operations at Historic St. John's Church, which include the historic performances of Patrick Henry's "Liberty or Death" speech, educational programs, special events and fundraising. Prior to that, Whiting worked for Preservation Virginia as Revolving Fund program manager and later as director of community resources and outreach; prior to that, Whiting worked with the Historic Richmond Foundation. Says Whiting, "I am thrilled to be joining the VAM council. It is an honor to work with my fellow council members to support and raise the profile of all the wonderful museums Virginia has to offer."

VAM is governed by a twenty-four member Council. On this Council are directors representing the seven geographic regions of VAM membership (Northern Virginia, Central Virginia, Southern Virginia, Tidewater & Eastern Shore, Southwest & Blue Ridge, Mountain & Valley, and the District of Columbia). Six directors represent the various disciplines of museums (Art, History, Historic Houses, Science & Nature, Specialized Audience, and University & College Museums and Galleries). Additionally, VAM council includes a director for emerging museum professionals. Executive oversight is provided by five officers - president, vice president for Programs, vice president for Planning and Resources, secretary and treasurer. There are also two directors-at-large, two ex-officio members, and the immediate past president.
