On an elevator recently, a young executive from AT&T recognized me. "I heard you speak last year," she said. "I hear a lot of motivational speakers and most of them don't stick. You stuck!"
That's the ultimate compliment for a speaker. To know what I said not only inspired someone but that it also motivated them to take action. When I asked her what she did after my program, she reported with pride that she cleaned up the clutter of her stack of magazines and created a vision board that helps keep her focused on her goals.
In my Working with Wisdom programs, I use action acronyms like CRAVE and DESIGN and compelling stories to help my audiences remember and then practice these simple, goal-getting strategies.
The good news is you don't have to be a speaker to stick with someone. Think of all the roles you play in your life, including boss/supervisor, coworker, spouse, parent, friend and neighbor. You might be a coach, sales professional or management consultant. What can you do or say that will have a positive impact on those around you? How can you earn their trust, stick in their hearts and minds, and motivate them to take action?
In the best-selling business book, Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die, authors Dan and Chip Heath explain the formula for "stickiness" through the acronym SUCCES:
- Simple - Find the core of the idea
- Unexpected - Grab people's attention by surprising them and generating curiosity
- Concrete - Make sure an idea can be grasped by everyone and remembered later
- Credible - Give an idea believability
- Emotional - Help people care about an idea
- Stories - Narrative tales draw people in, create pictures in their mind and help them remember
Share on my Facebook Page what you do to stick with others. You can also reply back to me. I love hearing from you!
