"When you focus on the goodness in your life,
you create more of it. Opportunities, relationships,
even money flowed my way when I learned
to be grateful no matter what happened in my life."
~Oprah Winfrey~

Express Thanks is the fifth in this ten-part series as a refresher or introduction to the powerful strategies in Working with Wisdom. See the others here
What we focus on expands and what we appreciate appreciates. Unfortunately, we tend to focus on what's not going right and what we don't have, instead of what's going right and what we do have.

When you cultivate an attitude of gratitude, you become more positive and aware so you can capitalize on the opportunities before you. One way is to write in a gratitude journal, a simple notebook you keep by your bed. A few nights a week, write a brief list of what you are grateful for that day and include at least one unique entry.  You'll start to notice things throughout the day that you want to add to your journal.

The following gratitude exercise will help you transform challenging relationships.

Call to Action:
  1. Think of someone in your personal or professional life that you must interact with on a regular basis who pushes all your buttons. Someone who is often unfairly critical and doesn't seem to appreciate you.
  2. For the next week, commit not to be critical of that person in what you say or think and, instead, think of something that you genuinely appreciate about them.
  3. If it's appropriate--like their communication skills, express it to them. If one day the best you can think of is that they teach you to be more patient, you're better off keeping that to yourself!
  4. Notice that when you express thanks, you are no longer feeding into that negative energy and that relationship improves.
  5. Repeat.
