Hachette Open House
Wednesday, August 6, 2014
10:00am - 4:00pm
We have been given a rare opportunity to spend a day in the Hachette NYC offices to talk business with their executives, discuss books with their editors, and socialize with their authors. The day will begin with an Open Forum with sales & fulfillment, a chance to ask questions and discuss backroom issues. If you have questions or comments or concerns you would like to express (whether you plan on attending that day or not) email them to NAIBA.

We will have a movable feast lunch with editors and hear about the upcoming books from the Fall 2014/Winter 2015 seasons and Spring/Summer 2015 lists. Five Hachette authors will participate in an author panel in the afternoon, followed by a tour of the offices and a meet-and-greet reception with HBG authors and staff. For those who can stay for the evening, Hachette will host a fabulous author dinner.

Click here for the bios of all the Hachette staff and authors that we will meet on August 6.

*LBYR will host a special table for children's book buyers. Please encourage your children's buyer to attend.

NAIBA and Hachette will cover a portion of the hotel stay for NAIBA members. Contact NAIBA for details.

Helmuth Sales Rep of the Year
Joe with his son Henry

NAIBA is very excited to announce Workman Publishing's Joe Ginis is the recipient of this year's Helmuth Sales Rep of the Year Award.

"My first thought when you told me I was chosen for the Helmuth award was, whoa. Who put you up to this?"

Joe continued, "I don't think of myself as a prideful person but I am very proud of being chosen for the Helmuth honor. It means the world to me to be recognized for a job well done by people I respect so much."

One of Joe's nominations came from Lexi Beach of The Astoria Bookshop.  Lexi said, "Joe is probably the best friend a new bookstore owner could possibly have. He was working to help me promote my store long before I even opened for business. He is gracious when I accidentally double book rep appointments, he gets me copies of my store's bestsellers even when the warehouse is out, he solves ordering & delivery problems almost instantaneously --all this while raising a brand new baby at home."

Joe will be given his award on Saturday, September 20 at the Awards Banquet during the NAIBA Fall Conference.

NYC Social
Jason Rice from event sponsor, Baker & Taylor and Heidi Shira Tennenbaum, manager of Housing Works Bookstore Cafe
NAIBA's annual NYC Social was a great success. The social took place Monday, July 14 at the Housing Works Bookstore Cafe in SoHo. Thanks to our sponsor Baker & Taylor, booksellers and industry personnel were able to enjoy appetizers and local brew while brushing elbows with authors Robert W. Snyder and Emily St. John Mandel.

Robert W. Snyder, Director of the American Studies Program at Rutgers spoke about his upcoming December title, Crossing Broadway: Washington Heights and the Promise of New York City (Cornell University Press).

Emily St. John Mandel was the second author to speak. Her new novel Station Eleven will be published by Knopf in September. An indie and NYC favorite, she told the crowd about her new book about a troupe of actors in a post-apocalyptic future, who risk everything to keep Shakespeare and music alive.

Even though our NYC Socials seem to occur on nights with torrential rain, the room was full, new friends were made, and it was wonderful to see all the staff from NYC stores in attendance.  Next year we'll get an umbrella sponsor.
We Need Diverse Books

More than just a hashtag, We Need Diverse Books is a grassroots organization created to address the lack of diverse, non-majority narratives in children's literature. NAIBA is pleased to present the first-ever diverse authors signing reception during the 2014 Fall Conference. Fifteen authors will join the reception from 7-8 pm on Saturday, September 20 to talk about their books and the WNDB campaign.
