We have another great event this week for booksellers. Todd and Sam Dickinson of Aaron's Books in Lititz, PA will open their store to us to discuss the mixing of new and used books in our stores. Everything from acquisition to shelving, POS, forms and credit will be discussed. Todd & Sam also want to cover large events for small stores, since they have had success with large-scale events.

Great Use of Your Time at BEA
In response to feedback to include more opportunities for bookseller/publisher interaction at BEA, this year ABA Education is providing two new offerings to bring booksellers and their publishing colleagues together: Meet the Editor and One-on-One Publisher Meetings. Go behind the scenes at some of Manhattan's biggest publishing houses or speed-date up to 11 publishing executives in less than two hours; owners and managers are welcome to sign up for both, and all booksellers are welcome to Meet the Editor. Here's what's in store: Meet the Editor Wednesday, May 28 (8:45 to 11:30 am) Experience the book editing process through in-person visits with New York book editors at their offices! Reps from the various publishing houses will escort groups of 10-12 booksellers from Hotel ABA (the Grand Hyatt) to their offices for 75 to 90 minute sessions. The structure of the editor meetings will vary by publisher; they are meant to give a behind-the-scenes look at the philosophy and process of book editing. These meetings are open to any bookseller from an ABA member store.
To view a list of participating publishers or to register, please log in to BookWeb. One-on-One Publisher Meetings Saturday, May 31 (10:00 am to noon) Modeled after the popular "speed-dating" format, meet with up to 11 top publishing executives for 10 minutes each to discuss topics of mutual interest. Participation is first-come, first-served, and limited to 2 participants per bookseller member company. Please note that One-on-One sessions are for bookstore owners and managers only, and that space is limited to 150 bookseller participants in total.
To view a list of participating publishers or to register , log in to BookWeb. Please note that both offerings require separate preregistrations, but share the same deadline: May 5, 2014, midnight EST. Registered booksellers will be emailed prior to BEA with publisher assignments and meeting information. If you have any questions about taking advantage of either of these new offerings, please call our ABA Member Relationship Manager: Catherine Cusick: 914-406-7566, catherine@bookweb.org |
Workshop for New & Prospective Bookstore Owners
Whether you're testing the waters or already a new owner, learning the business of bookselling - the art as well as the science - is critical for your personal and financial investment.
Retail bookselling is a low-margin business compared to other forms of retail. Many different aspects of the start-up process and ongoing operations demand your attention if you hope to achieve financial sustainability. With increased pressure from online outlets and e-books, it's more important than ever to understand and focus on the most critical aspects of the business and to establish a tangible competitive advantage.
"Owning a Bookstore: The Business Essentials" will be held Monday through Friday, May 5-9, at Amelia Island, Florida. Participants will learn the many aspects of the business - how to create a profit in retail bookselling, gauging your community's ability to support a bookstore, how to assess the strength of a location, understanding the key elements of store design and how much space you need, how to buy books and non-book merchandise, the disciplines of managing inventory, how to effectively use your bookstore computer system to manage the store, effective and low cost marketing strategies, developing an exceptional staff and more. Attendees will learn best practices and finely-tuned strategies of the most successful independent bookstores as they learn both the art and science of a career in retail bookselling.
Co-sponsored by the American Booksellers Association, this workshop is facilitated by Donna Paz Kaufman and Mark Kaufman of The Bookstore Training Group of Paz & Associates, with guest booksellers and trainers to share frontline expertise. Association members are eligible for discounted tuition. For details, visit PazBookBiz.com or call 904/277-2664.
