Indies First Storytime Day: May 17

To simplify the sign up process, ABA has done things a little differently this time. Bookstores can now sign up here to show up on the map and make changes to their volunteer/event information. Authors without a store can be found here, so that any store looking for volunteers will have an easier time find an author near them. (This list is constantly being added to as authors sign up.) Check it out there are lots of authors in your regions looking for stores.

If you'd like to see the author guidelines that better explain what Indies First is and the expectations of the movement, it can be found here and is linked in on the author sign up page.

Career in Bookselling

career in bookselling
NAIBA recently hosted the first in an annual event, a day devoted to Careers In Bookselling. A line-up of store owners and managers shared their stories, expertise, and insight to a room full of frontline booksellers.

ABA's Catherine Cusick did a great job reporting on the day in Bookselling This Week. The only thing I can add is that this day inspired NAIBA to create a certificate program for our professional booksellers. Watch for future announcements. The booksellers and faculty of Careers in Bookselling 2014 are on their way to accreditation!

Become A Storied Life

storied life personalized
Here's your chance to become part of The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry. To celebrate the #1 Indie Next Pick for April (with the most bookseller nominations in the history of IndieBound!) Algonquin is hosting a sweepstakes where three lucky booksellers will win a customized Storied Life print with their name emblazoned right on the cover (see example at right). How cool is that? The print will be signed by author Gabrielle Zevin and will come beautifully framed.

How do I enter? Heck, that's super easy. Just fill out this form. Only booksellers that are affiliated with an ABA member store are eligible to participate. All entries must be received by Friday, May 16, 2014. The three winning booksellers will be randomly selected. Winners will be notified by Friday, May 23, 2014.

Meet Concetta Kennedy

Concetta Kennedy is a young adult fiction writer. She is a former reading teacher who published her first book, The Enchanting World of Garden Irene McGeeny in 2012. She makes schools visits as often as possible and can easily travel the New York/PA area as well as North Carolina and Florida. When she makes schools visits she says, "We have fun!" She makes it a priority to check on student's reading and writing habits.  She speaks with them about how they can do better by improving their reading and writing skills. She also answers questions about what it's like to be an author, what inspired her story and how she got published.

See her profile on the NAIBA website, or reach out to her directly and book a visit to your store.
