A Warm and Fuzzy Feeling
I received the nicest note today from Jackie, Amanda and Nancy from Bethany Beach Books. It was a sweet  note about the NAIBA dinner at Winter Institute. If you haven't met them, Jackie, Amanda and Nancy are the nicest people and great company. What moves me most is the effort they make to say  thank you. It makes me feel so good whenever I get an email or note from any one of them. They've imprinted on my heart.

Someone recently said to me "thank before bank" and we should express more "thanks" in the relationships we have with our customers. Ask yourself: are you thanking that customer who just made a big purchase? Do you show your appreciation when a person mentions their loyalty? Imagine a customer's delight upon opening a handwritten note from you thanking them for supporting your store and your team of booksellers.  I know we all email customers about specials to loyal customers,  but that doesn't carry the same weight as a handwritten thank you note. I know it is time consuming, but don't you just love getting them?

First NAIBAhood Gathering of the Season
Sunday & Monday, February 23 & 24
BookTowne, Manasquan, NJ

graphic-beach-umbrellas.jpg

How apropos that our first event would be a winter retreat at the beach for Tourist Town Stores.

You don't need to be a store at the shore to attend - it is open to anyone who is somehow dependent on the tourist trade.

Email or call (516-333-0681) and let us know you are coming

Unlike city and suburban stores, booksellers in tourist destinations - whether the beach, lake or mountainside, face long stretches of downtime. We'll talk about those special challenges starting at 2pm on Sunday at BookTown, have a fine dinner together with authors who have summer releases and are from the region (store visits!), stay at a Bed & Breakfast in Spring Lake, and continue on Monday morning. You can be back on the road by lunchtime.

We will have four authors at dinner.  Let me introduce the first one.

The Winners Curseby Marie Rutkoski(First Second Books)

"Every line in The Winner's Curse is beautifully written. The story is masterfully plotted. The characters' dilemmas fascinated me and tore at my heart. This book gave me a rare and special reading experience: I never knew what was going to happen next. I loved it. I want more."

Call for Nominations: 2014's
PW Bookstore and
PW Rep of the Year

Publishers Weekly is seeking nominations for the annual
PW Bookstore and
PW Sales Rep of the Year Awards.

Nominees for PW Bookstore of the Year should operate a professional storefront retail bookstore in the U.S. and should excel in buying, vendor relations, marketing, handselling, customer care, community involvement, management-employee relations, merchandising, and business operations. Candidates cannot nominate themselves, nor can family members nominate them. Nominations should come from members of the book community and indicate what makes this bookstore stand out.

The PW Sales Rep of the Year award is open to both telephone and in-person sales representatives, who booksellers can rely on for information, guidance, and support. As part of their nomination, booksellers should include a story or example of their rep's commitment to excellence.

The deadline for nominations for both awards is Thursday, February 20 at 8 a.m. EST. Please submit nominations to Donna Paz Kaufman or Judith Rosen at PWawards@publishersweekly.com, or fax to 904.261.6742, and include your name, phone number, and industry affiliation. The judges who are selected from publishers and booksellers use the nominations as a factor in selecting the 2014 award winners.
