What would a teenage girl do if she is recovering from a pandemic and she becomes separated from the only people she loves and trust? Yvonne asks that question in her new YA novel, Pandemic (Sky Pony Press May 2014)

Yvonne was born and raised in Levittown, NY and resides in Morris County, NJ. She would love to visit our stores.

Dear Fellow Booksellers,

A warm welcome to 2014! It was quite a year for us as independent booksellers. We are very proud thatPublishers Weekly
recognized the hard work and vision of Oren Teicher and the ABA Board by selecting them PW's Person of the Year. 2013 was the year of resurgence for independent bookselling and we are once again seen as critical to the success of the book industry.

I hope you all had a good year -- a productive and lucrative year. It has been wonderful to work with you all and see the inventive and creative ways you remain a vital part of your community. From book festivals and book talks, expansions and diversifications, gift programs and storytimes, independent booksellers continue to reach out to readers and engage them. In an increasingly technology-driven world in a bland, generic landscape, we offer a dose of humanity - with a lot of personality!

This was quite an end-of-year schedule for us. A condensed holiday season, rough weather, UPS challenges, and somehow we all made it through! I always envision January as the time of year we can rest on our laurels and putter around the store in its' quiet mode. But the puttering around quickly turns into herculean inventory tasks, the minutia of end-of-the-years financials and reports, and, of course, planning, planning, planning.

And this is where NAIBA plays a crucial role in our success. Independent booksellers are often seen as the heart and soul of our communities, but we are also viable businesses. We have to constantly be vigilant in our efforts to improve. While this year has had positive notes, we are still faced with constant challenges. Working together will benefit us all. NAIBA continues to offer programs and services that nurture us, hone our skills, teach us and offer us a venue to exchange ideas.

I hope to see you at our upcoming NAIBAhood gatherings and look forward to continuing the conversation.

Best,

See You at Winter Institute

I am looking forward to WI9 in Seattle. I already know that one of my favorite things will be cheering on Len Vlahos and his book, Scar Boys. Fantastic book, not just a YA, and if you haven't read it, please do, and handsell the dickens out of it.

A number of our members will be gathering together for NAIBA-hosted dinners on Wednesday and Thursday. If you haven't any plans on either night, email us and we'll see if there is an empty seat at the table.  We couldn't do this without the generous support of GABBS and HarperCollins. We'll be celebrating the release of Michaela Carter's Further Out Than You Thought (August).

Be sure to stop me at Winter Institute and get your NAIBA button (Yo!NAIBA) and let everyone know you're from the NAIBAhood.
