exchange8 Great New Features
in Exchange 2013

exchangeExchange 2013 brings a new admin UI, big architecture changes, and a better webmail experience, among other updates.

There are plenty of changes in the forthcoming Exchange 2013 you may have missed, given all the attention on Windows 8, Office 2013, and Windows Server 2012.

Here is what Exchange admins can expect from Exchange 2013, based on its preview version:
  • Exchange Administration Center
  • Exchange architecture revisions
  • A new managed store
  • Modern public folders
  • Lots o' PowerShell cmdlets
  • DLP (data loss prevention)
  • Outlook Web App enhancements
  • Built-in antimalware
For Exchange admins who work with the GUI management console daily, the biggest challenge will be the new Web-based UI. But whatever your feelings are about Web-based consoles, I believe you'll like the overall changes in Exchange 2013, especially with enhanced integration with SharePoint and Lync 2013.

vmHow to Become Confident with Your VMware Decisions

Organizations are moving to the cloud for a variety of reasons.  One of the biggest reasons to move to the cloud is cost.  Cloud solutions are less expensive to deploy over the long term than locally storing all data on an owned network. The cost savings are primarily due to the fact that it reduces IT costs associated with maintaining the network infrastructure, which is an attractive option for most organizations. Outsourcing to a cloud solutions provider ensures that all necessary IT functions are operating properly but at a fraction of the cost of keeping it all in-house.

Another reason organizations are migrating to the cloud is the high availability a cloud provides. High availability refers to the amount of time that applications, systems, and components are operational.  In an ideal world, IT functions would be available at all times but the truth is someone needs to keep an eye on these processes. A cloud provider takes the responsibility of monitoring these aspects of the infrastructure, so companies can focus on their other IT needs.

cioCIOs Are Growing Attached to Google Glass

Google Glass is captivating the minds of CIOs, as they imagine all sorts of business possibilities for the technology. For example, retailers envision a future where simply looking at a product on the shelf brings up a display of all its relevant data. It sounds handy, but on the other hand, there are privacy concerns, not that most execs are likely to let such details distract them from gazing lustily at Google's latest flashy technology.

The reason that smartphones became the fastest-adopted consumer technology ever -- until the iPad came along -- is the combination of mobility, personal-ness, and utility. Google Glass will be even more mobile and more personal to the point I call it "intimate," as it becomes almost part of you.

intelIntel Loses Ground as the World's Top Semiconductor Company
Agam Shah | IDG News Service

Intel remains the world's top semiconductor company by sales, but rivals like Samsung and Qualcomm are catching up.

As Intel mulls a plan to expand its contract-manufacturing operations, the company has lost ground as the world's top semiconductor company to chip suppliers benefiting from the success of mobile devices, according to a study by IC Insights released on Monday.

Based on revenue, Intel remained the top semiconductor company, but has lost market share to Samsung and Qualcomm, which design and supply chips for smartphones and tablets. A lot of Intel's chips are being used in PCs, whose sales are falling.

Intel's semiconductor sales in the first quarter were $11.56 billion, a 3 percent drop from the $11.87 billion in the first quarter of 2012. Samsung's semiconductor sales were $7.95 billion, up by 13 percent thanks to a boost from Apple, whose chips for iPhones and iPads are manufactured and supplied by Samsung.

Intel has the most advanced manufacturing factories today and will start making chips using the 14-nanometer process early next year. TSMC and GlobalFoundries supply many ARM-based chips to device makers and the chip makers have received a boost thanks to the growing demand for mobile devices. TSMC and GlobalFoundries hope to catch up with Intel in the manufacturing process by making their first chips laden with a 3D transistor -- also called FinFET -- starting next year. But unlike its rivals, Intel will be shrinking the transistor and will be a generation ahead in the FinFET process.
