Island life has slowed down a bit and it's actually kind of nice to take a break before the holiday season, which I can't believe is already here.  It seems like Labor Day weekend was just yesterday!

And though the pace has quieted down, we are always looking for new acquisitions for our Modern Masters collection.   The "Danse a la Campagne" is one of the new works that the gallery recently acquired.

"Danse a la Campagne" a soft-ground etching by Pierre-Auguste Renoir

(1841 - 1919)

The inspiration for this particular etching was not the painting itself, but one of the preparatory drawings for it, portraying Suzanne Valadon and Renoir's brother Edmond (some say it is his friend Paul Lhote) dancing at Bougival.  For more information on this particular work, kindly contact the gallery directly.

We also have new works by the  contemporary artists featured in this newsletter, Duane Alt, Curtis Hanson, Russell Gordon and Sandi Blanda.

With the gift giving season beginning we will be offering complimentary shipping on all FedEx two day service through December 15, 2014.  Just something to keep in mind as you begin to think about who's been naughty and who's been nice!

I hope you enjoy this newsletter and please let us know if you have any questions or special interests.

My best to you,

Christina

DUANE ALT

Duane Alt came upon his fascination with and ultimate mastery of Impressionism in a somewhat indirect way. He was born in a small town in Nebraska in 1935 and raised in Southern California. From a very young age he felt a compulsive drive to paint, and during his high school years, he worked after school mixing paints for the scenery painters at the Hollywood film studios.

While still a teenager, he began his formal art studies at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles, and in the 1960s, he studied art at the Sorbonne and the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. It was there that the heritage of the Impressionists captured his heart and influenced his personal style.

RUSSELL GORDON

Russell Gordon was born in 1968 in Maryland. He began drawing at an early age. He says   "In those days in school you could read or draw as soon as you were finished with an assignment so I learned that the benefit of doing well in class was the privilege of being left alone to draw. I loved drawing and found art to be the best way to record what I saw in nature and to express ideas and emotions."

CURTIS HANSON

Curtis began his journey as an artist at Fort Wright College in Washington State. He studied under Charles Palmer and Stan Traft, laying a foundation for his life's work inside the classroom and outdoors on the many fishing expeditions the three would take.

His path would take him to New York City where he would inhale the essences of the Barbizon School paintings and find shelter in the work of George Inness.  From New York, he moved to Boston where he studied for three years in the atelier of Ives Gammell.  Gammell had trained with William Paxton, who like the other Boston painters of Paxton's time, studied in Paris when both academic and impressionist painting styles were at their height.
