Artist's Reception

Thursday August 7

5:00 to 7:00 pm

Our season is just beginning here on the Vineyard.  It's been wonderful to see everyone walking around town and stopping by the gallery to say hello.  It's always nice to catch up with friends and clients.

The gallery has two new artists who are featured in this newsletter.  Kate Tortland just graduated from college where she majored in fine art.  She has a beautiful sense of color and approach to her oil paintings.  Herb Edwards is also an oil painter whose subject is primarily landscapes.  His work is very calm and relaxing, much like Herb himself.

We are also featuring a large collection of works by the Pissarro family for the season.  The collection includes a drawing by Camille Pissarro and several oil paintings by his sons and grandson, H. Claude.

As most of you may know, we try to take a trip each year to Paris.  This past February we spent a week there and had a wonderful time walking around the city.  It was much milder in Paris than here on the island - almost 25 degrees warmer!  The suite by Maurice Utrillo titled "Paris Capitale" will be truly appreciated by all of you who have traveled to the City of Light.

With the island coming back to life, we hope that you will stop by the gallery to say hello as well as to view and enjoy this season's collection.  We look forward to sharing these works with you.

All the best!

"Fleurs"

by Paulemile Pissarro (1884-1972)

CAMILLE PISSARRO & FAMILY

Born on the Island of St. Thomas in 1830, Camille Pissarro became a master of the Impressionist movement whose influence extended to not only his contemporaries in Paris, but also his own immediate family. Pissarro learned to paint by carefully paying attention to the changing light during different times of day and different seasons, a legacy he passed on to all those who studied under him.

Of Pissarro's seven children, four of his sons grew to be respected artists in their own right; Lucien, Ludovic-Rodo, Georges Henri (Manzana), and Paulémile.  Felix, a middle child, was also an artist but he passed away at the very young age of 23.

"Montmartre Le Sacre Couer"

by Maurice Utrillo (1883-1955)

MAURICE UTRILLO (1883 - 1955)

Maurice Utrillo was born in Paris on December 26, 1883.  His mother, Marie-Clementine (aka Suzanne) Valadon was a young model in 1880s Paris, posing for such painters as Puvis de Chavannes, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Berthe Morisot.

Young Maurice was described as neurotic and did poorly in both scholarly and business pursuits. At the age of eighteen he was committed to an asylum as a result of encroaching alcoholism. Although he had never exhibited artistic tendencies, his talent became apparent when he began painting as a form of therapy. His mother continued to support and encourage him; and although she provided some instruction, Maurice was largely self-taught.
