The Heat is On: Tips on Surviving the Heat
Warning: Heat and Parkinson's don't mix well. By following these simple tips you can beat the heat and hopefully stay well:
- Drink lots of water BEFORE you feel thirsty. Once you feel thirsty you are already beginning to dehydrate. Remember, it is easier to stay hydrated then to re-hydrate.
- Avoid alcohol. It can accelerate the dehydration process.
- Use sunscreen - individuals with Parkinson's are more likely to develop melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer.
- Cover up. Wear long sleeves, pants and a hat that shades your neck and ears. There are some wonderful new sun resistant light-weight clothing materials available to help prevent sunburn.
- Schedule your outside exercise and chores during the cooler times in the day. We scheduled our new Walking Group at Fairmount to step-off Mondays at 8am to beat the heat!
