Cause for Celebration
On September 12, Nina Montaldo and over 30 of her honorary sons and daughters, celebrated and recognized her 30 plus years of fundraising with a drag show to benefit the Parkinson Association of the Rockies. During this event they raised over $3,000 to benefit the Association's programs and services.
Nina has been entertaining and raising funds for charities since 1969 as a member of the Imperial Court of the Rocky Mountain Empire; with whom she is the 24th Empress and considered the 'mother' of drag. However, this show was a bit more personal. Last year Nina was diagnosed with Parkinson's. Nina's family in the LGBT community has been extremely supportive of her and the challenges she is dealing with.
Board member, Rick Schwartz, joined the event to talk about Parkinson's disease and the programs and services which are available for them and their loved ones. He also touched the heartstrings of everyone when he said to Nina, "I feel the love in this room for you. This (along with treatments and healthy living) is all you need to survive."
Nina and her family plan to make this an annual event to raise awareness of Parkinson's and raise funds to help those living with Parkinson's in our community.
