Community-Wide Thanks
Jay's Valet Creative Community Support
Each year Jay's Valet partners with the Parkinson Association to support our events. But Jay's Valet doesn't just support us - they are raising awareness and funds for many worthy organizations in our backyard. A few years ago Jay and team developed a way to utilize March Madness to support our community - pairing a charity to each team on the bracket and proving charitable gifts to the top teams. While the Parkinson Association is already "out of the game" for this year, we wanted to highlight Jay's Valet's commitment to our community and thank them for continued and creative support. All-Out MultiSports Spring Fever Run

As well as give thanks to D and her amazing race coordination team and all the volunteers who's hard work made for a very successful event.

At Last Spring is Here!

At last spring is here. The crocus are in bloom, accented by the beauty of daffodils.  This past weekend gardeners were cleaning the flower beds while basking in the warmth of the magnificent Colorado sun. As the weather begins to warm up, we are reminded that people living with Parkinson's and specifically Coloradoans living with Parkinson's must take special care of their skin while enjoying the out-of-doors.

People with Parkinson's are up to four times more likely to develop melanoma, (a serious and potentially life-threatening form of cancer) than individuals without this disease. While further research is needed to better understand the underlying connection between the two diseases, there is no evidence to support the long-held belief that Levadopa is the culprit for the increased risk of Melanoma in those living with Parkinson's.

Caucasians have a greater risk of developing Melanoma than African-Americans, Hispanics, or Asians. White males are at the greatest risk of developing this serious form of skin cancer followed closely by white females. Colorado's mortality rates from melanoma are 18-22% higher than the US average.

While the warmth of the spring sun is a reminder to protect our skin from damage, we must be vigilant year round to the ever-present risk of melanoma. Precautions must be taken to reduce the likelihood of developing melanoma, especially if you are living with Parkinson's disease.

Regularly protect your skin by:

  • Reducing unprotected sun exposure during midday hours on sunny AND cloudy days
  • Making effective use of natural or portable shade sources
  • Wearing long-sleeved shirts, full-length pants and wide-brimmed hats to protect skin from direct exposure to the sun
  • Applying and reapplying sunscreen with SPF or higher to all exposed skin areas.  Remember to also apply lip balm with a similar SPF recommendation. (NOTE:  this recommendation DOES NOT apply to infants less than 6 months old)
  • Avoiding tanning devices including sunlamps and tanning beds

Even if you regularly adhere to the above recommendations a sure way to nip melanoma in the bud requires having annual skin examinations with a dermatologist. While melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer, if detected early it can be cured by surgery.

Enjoy our gorgeous state and be remain vigilant while having fun in the sun! Always consult a professional health care provided if you experience changes in health conditions, including your skin.

Interesting fact: Your skin is the largest organ in your body. The skin of an average adult has a surface area of over 21 square feet and accounts for 6% to 10% of your body weight, edging out the liver, your body's second-largest organ, which accounts for approximately 2.5% of your body weight.
