On Thursday, May 22, 2014, the Sons of Italy Foundation's 26th Annual National Education & Leadership Awards (NELA) Gala returns to the National Building Museum to honor: 

 

 

The NELA Gala is the SIF's most important fund-raising and public affairs event, highlighting the foundation's commitment to educational excellence, leadership and the betterment of society. To date, the NELA Gala has helped the SIF raise nearly $128 million for education, medical research, disaster relief, cultural preservation, and other special projects, with $58 million in scholarships awarded.

Then White House Chief of Staff Leon E. Panetta represented President Clinton at the National Education & Leadership Awards (NELA) Gala in 1995, held at the National Press Club. 

 

"I want to congratulate the scholarship winners," said Panetta. "That's [education] what this organization is all about. It [OSIA] represents the American dream. As an Italian American, I can't tell you how proud I am to be here." 

 

The Sons of Italy Foundation will honor Leon Panetta with the 2014 National Education & Leadership Award at this year's NELA Gala.
