John Phillips Appointed as U.S. Ambassador to Italy

The new U.S. Ambassador to Italy, John Phillips, arrived in Rome last month to start his new position. Phillips, a Washington lawyer who previously served as Chair of the President's Commission on White House Fellowships, is married to Linda Douglass, who served as Director of Communications for the White House Office of Health Reform.

President Johnson signed the Uniform Monday Holiday Bill in 1968, making Columbus Day a federal holiday celebrated annually on the second Monday in October. After signing the bill, President Johnson sent one of the pens used in the signing to then-Supreme Venerable Peter J. Bertoglio as a sign of appreciation for the immense support given to this bill by the OrderThe bill took effect in January, 1971.

The Sons of Italy 2013 Italian Festival Directory lists 371 festivals in 39 states and the District of Columbia. This month, there are 36 festivals across the country.
