William Shakespeare's status as arguably the preeminent writer of the English language has ensured that composers have set his words to music through the generations from his own time to 2016. In this program, you will hear this demonstrated in part songs from the Elizabethan era, gorgeous Romantic sonorities by Ralph Vaughan Williams, and a Swingle Singers version of It Was a Lover and his Lass from As You Like It. You will also meet the Finnish Macbeth as imagined by Jaakko Mäntyjärvi, and witness Ophelia's tragic demise in Ingolf Gabold's Your Sister's Drowned. Written especially for the occasion, the world premiere of Gems and Tempests by Cambridge composer Graham Gordon Ramsay provides a fresh take on three of the bard's beloved sonnets.
Doors open at 4:30 PM, open seating. Validated discount parking is available at One Beacon Garage, across the street from the chapel.

On Sunday we will gather as a community to celebrate the work of our congregation, throughout the year, and to talk about upcoming plans. This annual luncheon is always inspiring - we learn of all that happens around here, sometimes very quietly, with little fanfare. It's fitting that the scripture passages for the day include Paul's reminder to the Corinthians that a church needs folks with a wide variety of talents and interests - just like any "body," King's Chapel needs both hands and mouths, feet and stomachs. Come and learn how you might fit in, in some new unexpected way. As for Jesus, he boils it all down to the core of what church is meant to be, at our best - a place that "brings good news to the poor, proclaims release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind."

TONIGHT! | Theology on Tap | 7PM
We love the Christmas story. We love to hear the message of the angels and sing with hearts uplifted. We love our nativity pageants and Christmas cards. Have you ever wondered about the annunciation-the biblical scene in which the angel tells Mary (a virgin) that she is going to give birth? Was she really a virgin? Does it matter? For centuries, it mattered so greatly that some were willing to die for their belief. Join us for Theology on Tap as we discuss "The Virgin Birth: Fact or Fable." No homework required. Budget and Committee Hearing | January 24
The meeting to hear committee reports and the proposed budget for 2016 will be held Sunday January 24 at the Parish House. A luncheon will be provided at 12:30PM, with the meeting to start immediately after. Come and hear of all the work that was done in the past year, while looking to the future at King's Chapel!

Heinrich Christensen to Give Organ Recital
On Friday, January 29th at 8PM, Heinrich Christensen will perform works by composers Graham Gordon Ramsay and Robert Sirota. The recital will be offered at Saint Cecilia Parish Church at 18 Belvedere Street. Admission is free. Watch the video for more information!

Once again, the very talented Emanuel Genovese, the Mosaic Maestro, will be guiding our children as they create another masterpiece to add to the Little Chapel in the Parish House. Our first session will be Sunday, January 31st at 10AM!

Mardi Gras Party
/Talent Show at the Parsonage | Friday, February 5, 7 PM
Please join Bob and me for our second Mardi Gras party at the Parsonage, 63 Beacon St., Boston. We'll provide some drinks and desserts; we hope that some of you will choose to provide the entertainment! Two years ago when we hosted our first party, members and friends of King's Chapel sang, read written projects, gave history presentations, danced or just watched and applauded. What talent would you like to share? Come one and all, for a fun evening on a cold February night. Shrove Pancake Breakfast | Save the Date, February 7 10AM
Who can say No to the aroma of pancakes and waffles wafting through the Parish House on a cold February Sunday morning? We welcome you to stop by the Parish House at 10AM for a savory breakfast treat before attending the 11AM Morning Prayer at King's Chapel. Your pancake and waffle options include blueberries, chocolate chips, and cinnamon and brown sugar. Your chefs and servers will be none other than the Church School Staff and participants.

Ash Wednesday | February 10
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 10. Lent is the forty day season of preparation for Easter. Services of Prayer and Imposition of Ashes will be held at 12:15PM and 6PM. Clergy will be available all day at the church for the imposition of ashes and prayer.

Coffee with the Clergy | February 14
Curious about King's Chapel? Got questions? Are you a new friend or a familiar face? The clergy of King's Chapel will be available for casual conversation and coffee on February 14th at 10AM in the Vestry of the church (located behind the pulpit). All are welcome.

Lenten Study: Voices from the Gospel of Luke |
Wednesdays at 7 PM at the Church, March 2, 9, 16.
Have you ever wanted an overview of the whole life of Jesus - a summary, so you could get the gist? Here's your opportunity. On three Wednesdays, we will read the Gospel of Luke, the lectionary text that King's Chapel will be following throughout the year. We'll read from a simple play script written by a colleague of mine, using voices of men and women from Luke. Participants can "read" a voice from the Gospel script, or just listen. Each reading will be followed by a discussion led by the Rev. Joy Fallon. No preparation is required; scripts will be provided. You may choose to worship at the 6 PM service beforehand, or not; all are welcome. We'll serve a light dinner of soup.

Farewell and Well Wishes to our Bookkeeper Cindy Stephens
|
We are sad to say that our dear bookkeeper, Cindy Stephens, will be leaving us this week. Cindy has been with us for over four years, bringing her knowledge and experience to our financial team and helping us navigate the growth of King's Chapel. Cindy has taken a full time position at a school closer to her home, so no more travel! We are happy for her, but sad to see her go. We are interviewing candidates for this position, and hope to have someone in place by the end of the month.

Daniel S. Sullivan is a Foundation Ambassador of The Shafik Gabr Foundation and an inaugural 2013 Gabr Fellow. He served over a decade as Aide/Chief of Staff to the Dean of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, Rep. David Flynn. In 2015/2016, Daniel will serve as a Franklin Project Ambassador, a program of the Aspen Institute to promote national service as a civic rite of passage, under the leadership of General Stanley McChrystal. Daniel is North American Representative to the Youth Advisory Board of UN- HABITAT and Regional Representative to the United Nations Association Steering Committee, a Young Diplomat with the Global Diplomatic Forum, a Truman National Security Project Partner, Fellow of the New Leaders Council, Senior Fellow of the Environmental Leadership Program, and 10-year Clinton Global Initiative volunteer. Daniel received his ALB in Government from Harvard University Extension School, Certificate in Health and Human Rights from Harvard School of Public Health, and is graduate of the Leadership for Change program at the Winston Center on Leadership & Ethics at Boston College. He has been a U.S.-Spain Council Young Leader, Youth Ambassador of United Religions Initiative, IEL Education Policy Fellow, EUVP delegate, a Henry Toll Fellow, U.S. delegate to the First Global Forum on Youth Policies, American delegate to the U.S. State Department's Young Turkey/Young America program administered by The Atlantic Council & Istanbul Policy Center, and delegate to the UN Commission on the Status of Women, UN Commission on Social Development, and UN Youth General Assembly. Daniel was a 2015 Caux Scholar in Switzerland.

John Appleton is a "serial resident" of Beacon Hill, starting with 1958-1973, then 1994-2000, and since 2013, now residing on Brimmer Street. John served as Senior VP for both State Street Bank and Fidelity Investments during a 40+ year career in Institutional Investing. In addition to these business activities, John has led an active civic life. Among them include: Treasurer for many of John Sears Campaigns; President, Boston Junior Chamber of Commerce; Vice Chairman, Republican Boston Ward 5 Committee; Chairman Manchester School Committee; Treasurer, Manchester Sailing Assn.; Trustee, Brookwood School. John Continues a Director of the Andover Group of Insurance Companies., and Trustee, Trustees of Donations for Education in Libera (Est. 1840).

The prelude this Sunday will be In Praise of San Simpliciano by Graham Gordon Ramsay, who writes: In Praise of San Simpliciano is in two movements: I. Fanfare, and II. Invention. It was composed for organist/composer Harvey Burgett to premiere at the Basilica di San Simpliciano in Milan, Italy in 2009. The Basilica organ is a 1991 Ahrend replica of a Bach period instrument. The piece features a straightforward conservative musical language, allowing for performance on a wide range of instruments including small single manual organs with limited range, period instruments with Baroque tuning, and large contemporary organs with many options for color variation.
Immediately following, for our Introit you will hear a little preview of the afternoon Shakespeare concert, Mr. Ramsay's new setting of Sonnet no. 8, appropriately entitled Music To Hear. Brian Church will be the baritone soloist.
The Motet is by another Boston composer, albeit of another era. William Billings taught singing schools at King's Chapel back in colonial times, and composed the anthem Sublimity, a setting of Psalm 19.
We continue our theme of African music for the month of January with the Kenyan folk song Wana Baraka for our Offertory. This popular religious song was arranged by Shawn Kirchner who first heard it on a trip to Ghana in 1994.
The postlude is also by Graham Ramsay, from his large organ work Jacob vs. Angel. You will hear a rather violent movement called simply Crash, which depicts the Angel attacking Jacob. The work is inspired by Alice Weaver Flaherty's poetry:
At nightfall, with a crash, Jacob was knocked flat. It seemed to Jacob that a thief should strike and go. This one wanted more, all of him. Jacob fought with all his strength. The robber pinned him easily. Jacob was enraged; he kicked and bit. The thief sat on his head.

We Rejoice with those Who Rejoice, and Weep with Those Who Weep
Our former minister, the Rev. Earl Holt, has shared that his youngest brother, Robert Paine Holt unexpectedly died at age 58 on January 1st. Earl led the memorial service in Alabama last weekend, and we offered prayers of thanks for
Robert's life, newly received into God's glory. Please hold Earl, Marilyn and all their family in your prayers.
Peter and Anne Sexton shared that their son-in-law, Santiago, did all of the scouting in Patagonia for the Oscar-nominated movie, the Revenant, "when they ran out of snow in Canada. This was done during his summer break from being the production manager of Blue Bloods." Congratulations!
Rev. Shawn Fiedler has been accepted to the Foundations of Christian Leadership Program at Duke University. Through this program, Duke University works with religious leaders to explore their gifts and cultivate practices that are essential for spurring transformation within Christian institutions. Participants gather twice a year.

We were honored to welcome Amanda Grant-Rose into the pulpit on January 17th. Amanda is the Executive Director of common cathedral-an outdoor church community serving Boston's homeless population. Amanda's words were comforting and challenging. Her sermon can be found here.

This past weekend, King's Chapel gathered on retreat at Glastonbury Abbey in Hingham, Massachusetts. Heinrich Christensen and Rev. Shawn Fiedler led the group in discussions and reflections on hymns and spirituality. There was time to reflect, relax, and-of course-sing! Thank you to all who participated.

King's Chapel Needs Your Help!
After our Morning Light service, we offer refreshments and coffee as we catch up with each other about the past week's events. We need volunteers to help supply the refreshments (the Parish House will supply the coffee). There is a sign up sheet available every Sunday after the service. The Morning Light service needs readers and offering collectors! Next to the refreshment sign up sheet, there is another sheet for children, youth, and adults who would like to volunteer to read the passage for the service and/or collect the offering. If you would like to sign up in advance of Sunday morning, send an email to church.school@kings-chapel.org.

Accessibility Assists
Our beautiful Georgian sanctuary designed by Peter Harrison and completed in 1754, has been lovingly maintained by the congregation since its completion. One of the box pews has been made wheel-chair accessible. Ushers are available to assist those who are wheelchair-bound to that pew.
