Seeker or Skeptic: Listening to Each Other Over Lunch. | Sunday, November 1st at the Parish House, 64 Beacon Street, immediately following morning prayer.

Round table, small group discussion over a simple hot lunch. Please join us in discovering our wonderful diversities and commonalities in beliefs and backgrounds.

Six parishioners have already shared a statement of belief, in connection with the three forums last spring. Click here to see those statements on the KC website. Some of us are uncertain but eager to learn from others; some of us find that our understandings changing over time.

Many of us treasure the rich variety of views and background of those who worship at King's Chapel, but we don't have many opportunities to listen quietly to each other. The Adult Religious Education Committee offers this gathering as one such opportunity. As always, it's helpful to know who plans to come; email [email protected] or call the office, 617 227-2155. But come, whether you RSVPd or not!
From the Minister
"Is there a heaven?"  That's the sermon topic for Sunday, when we will mark All Saints and All Souls Day, remembering those who have "gone on before us."  But where have they gone on to?" What happens after any of us die?

None of us knows, but all of us wonder: sometimes with a philosophical detachment, or open curiosity, sometimes with an intense desire for certainty, or a troubled heart.  Can hints be found anywhere, from the world in which we live, and the experiences we have while alive?  What's the relevance of the Bible text assigned for Sunday, when Jesus says the greatest commandment is to love God with all our heart and soul and mind and strength, and our neighbor as ourselves.  Is it too simple to assume that whatever comes next must be somehow about love....

With blessing always, Joy

Thursday, November 19, 6:30 PM - A gathering at Joy's Home for any who have lost a loved one.

The last two years have been hard ones for many people who worship at King's Chapel because someone you've cared about died. I'm aware of the deaths of parents, spouses, life partners, and grandparents. Others have lost children, friends, family, neighbors, and those for whom they've been caregiver.  If you are experiencing loss, you are invited to my home on Thursday evening, November 19, at 6:30 PM, for an informal gathering in my living room. Over a shared meal, we will be with one another, share thoughts or stories, or just listen.  Sometimes it's good to be with others who grieve.

We'll also talk about any ideas you have of future programs the church might offer that could help those who are bereaved.

The parsonage is located at 63 Beacon St., adjoining the Parish House at 64 Beacon St.  Due to the construction on the front entrances, please enter through the back door into the parish house garden, located on Branch Street.  Signs will be posted so you can find your way.

Sound System
A thank you to all who took the time to provide thoughts about the unveiling of our new sound system, voted on by the Vestry this past summer. Adjustments have been made to the volume of the sound provided by the Bose speaker at the front of the sanctuary.  These adjustments have reduced the amplification of the ministers' voices, while still being true to our goal to have everyone hear the spoken word without amplification being evident.  Comments after morning worship last week were positive.  Continue to give us your thoughts.  We are clearly headed in the right direction.  In addition to system adjustments, training of lay speakers will be important to the quality of sound that can be provided.

In addition to the Bose speaker, our system provides additional assistive listening components that allow for enhanced sound through a variety of headsets that are available or through one's personal hearing aid.  For those who have expressed a desire for the smaller ear buds that were used with our earlier assisted listening system, the new system will accommodate ear buds that you may already own.  For those who do not own ear buds, an order was placed this week for new ones.  For our regular worshippers who would like to use these new ear buds, we will label them so that you will be able to use the same earphones at each service you attend.

For the next several weeks, those who are using the assistive listening devices should continue to sit in the front half of the sanctuary.  Testing of these devices is continuing so that the same level of sound quality can be insured regardless of where you are seated.

Adjustments will continue to be made to improve the quality of sound.

From the Bench
By Heinrich Christensen
As you most likely have read elsewhere already, the music for this Sunday's service will be Gabriel Faur's Requiem, opus 48.

Soloists are soprano Joei Perry, and baritone Brian Church who will also perform double duty conducting, while Heinrich plays the organ reduction of the original orchestral accompaniment.

Faur's reasons for composing his Requiem are uncertain. One possible impetus may have been the death of his father in 1885, and his mother's death two years later. However, by the time of his mother's death he had already begun the work, about which he later declared, "My Requiem wasn't written for anything - for pleasure, if I may call it that!"

In 1887-88, Faur composed the first version of the work, which he called "un petit Requiem" with five movements.

In 1890 he expanded the Offertory and added the 1877 "Libera Me". This second version was premired on January 21, 1893, at the Church of the Madeleine with Faur conducting.

In 1899-1900, the score was reworked for full orchestra. This final version was premired at the Trocadro in Paris on July 12,1900, during the Universal Exhibition that took place that year.

In 1924 the Requiem, in its full orchestral version, was performed at Faur's own funeral. It was not performed in the United States until 1931, at a student concert at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.

Did You Know?
Administrative Assistant Simon Pilecki has been volunteering with the Citizens School Program, in which he teaches an extracurricular class at the Edwards Middle School in Charlestown once a week. The course he has been teaching is Time to Invent!, in which the students are given various scenarios and problems, which must be solved using the Design Process. They go through these different steps (brainstorming, designing, building, etc.) to figure out the best way to solve these weekly tasks, such as getting a fruit roll up off a wall, or having a place to sit while waiting for a bus. Inventions the students work on include padded mailers, trophy towers, and portable chairs!
Daylight Savings Time!

Daylight Savings Time ends this Sunday, November 1st, at 2:00am. The clock is set to go back one hour at that time, so make sure to set back your watches so you don't arrive at the Sunday Service too early!
We Weep with those Who Weep
We were saddened to learn of the death of our former member, David B. Arnold, Jr., who died at the age of 93 on Friday, September 25th, in Concord, Massachusetts, where he had moved with his wife Dorothy.  A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, October 31, at 2 pm at Trinity Episcopal Church, 81 Elm Street, Concord, MA.
Accessibility and Hearing Assists

Our beautiful Georgian sanctuary designed by Peter Harrison and completed in 1754, has been lovingly maintained by the congregation since its completion. One of the box pews has been made wheel-chair accessible.  Ushers are available to assist those who are wheelchair-bound to that pew.
