I love bread. It is an essential ingredient in most diets. Bread is an energy producing carbohydrate. Not surprisingly, bread appears again and again in our sacred stories. When the Israelites are famished, God delivers manna to the desert to satisfy them. When Elijah is so deep in despair that he begs God for death, God feeds him bread to empower his mission. Jesus fed the multitudes with loaves of bread and fishes. At prayer we plead for this gift from God: 'give us this day our daily bread.' And with his last meal before death, Jesus serves bread and wine.
This Sunday we receive an invitation from Lady Wisdom in the Book of Proverbs: "Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed." Lady Wisdom extends an invitation to a feast-a table set with savory breads and sweet wines-set with the most basic necessities. Lady Wisdom's invitation is different than other invitations in the Bible. There is no cost. There are no strings attached. The banquet is not a 'pie in the sky dream' or a distant hope. The feast is in this reality, it is here and now. And you are invited.

Last Sunday we enjoyed punch on the bricks provided by Fay Larkin and Julie Hyde.
The tasty treats included the "pick of the day" from Julie's garden: fresh carrots and other veggies harvested just that morning. Julie and Fay also brought the flowers for the communion table, freshly cut that morning. Thanks to both for the summer bounty! |
The Sermon Last Week
I preached on Psalm 130, and our soloist Thomas Gregg, joined me as he sang portions of the Motet again, interspersed throughout the sermon. The Motet was a beautiful rendition of the psalm, entitled "Out of the Depths I cried unto Thee," by James Hotchkiss Rogers. To see the piece Tom sang, click here.
The audio of the sermon will be available

Pastoral Visits
This week I was able to visit with a number of our members who are on our Bede list, which we read aloud on Sundays during Morning Prayer. If you would like a pastoral visit or want someone to be added to the Bede list, please let Shawn or me know. If you would like to help visit others, please also contact us. Together, we as a community, minister to one another.
With one member, I read the Morning Prayer service. Such a smile when I came to this line from our General Prayer of Thanksgiving:
"We bless thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life, but above all, for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory."
Words set to heart, through our Prayer Book service, feed us all our life long.

From the Bench
By Heinrich Christensen
|
Our soloist this Sunday is Mindy Hinkel who will sing Father of Heaven from Judas Maccabeus by Handel, and Eucharistica by the famous cellist Pablo Casals:
Deep in my heart I bear my Lord. My heart is a sacred host to Jesus.
Therefore in my heart, the light that gives serenity is ever glorious.
Deep in my heart I bear my Lord, and my heart leaps joyfully within me. Goodness today makes sorrow light, and I have angels for my companions.
Deep in my heart I bear my Lord, and ever see the light of Heaven
that keeps me always from the ways of darkness, and of evil doings.
Deep in my heart I bear my Lord, and all my life I will be with him.
I want my voice to speak of love, as does the Seraph that proclaims him. My way shall be a path of lilies, the path on which I walk beside him.
Heinrich will play pre- and postlude settings of the chorale Liebster Jesu, wir sind hierby Bach, Walther, and Skriver.

Shawn Away
This week Rev. Fiedler is attending the National Church Leadership Institute and will not be at the Parish House. The conference gathers together innovative thinkers from many denominations and traditions to learn, discuss and re-imagine the future of Christianity in the United States. Rev. Fiedler is co-leading a workshop on worship trendlines that encourage more lay leadership and is pointing to a return to time-tested ancient practices. He is available via email throughout the conference, but response might be limited. |
Vacation Schedules
Our Assistant Minister Shawn Fiedler will be preaching through Sunday, August 30, while I am on vacation, returning on September 1st. Bob and I celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary this year, and will take a trip to Quebec City, as well as several days on Cape Cod. If you need to reach me in an emergency, Shawn will know how to be in touch with me. -Joy

The Upcoming Calendar
If you need information about a church event, please check the Calendar posted on the church website, www.kings-chapel.org. The first tab to the far left is titled "Home" and under this tab are several options, including our calendar. We do our best to keep it updated. Events for September are already listed. |
Parishioners Helping Parishioners
This will be a new feature, from time to time. If the church has jobs that need to be done; you have skills to offer the church or one another; or you need some help, please let us know. This week:
Needed: A Good Used Affordable Car
A member of our congregation is in need of a replacement car, after the one she relies on recently became irreparable. If you have a reliable car you are looking to donate or sell, or if you have a car you would be willing to loan for several weeks, please contact the Parish House.
Wanted: Someone to video sermons periodically. Bill Sears is the only person currently taping sermons; if he can't be present, they aren't recorded. It's an easy
task for someone attending the Sunday morning service. We'll provide the equipment. Contact Joy Fallon, Shawn Fiedler or Julina Rundberg at the Parish House: joy@kings-chapel.org, shawn@kings-chapel.org, julina@kings-chapel.org

Accessibility and Hearing Assists
Our beautiful Georgian sanctuary designed by Peter Harrison and completed in 1754, has been lovingly maintained by the congregation since its completion. One of the box pews has been made wheel-chair accessible. Ushers are available to assist those who are wheelchair-bound to that pew.
Many of us have trouble hearing in our sanctuary, which does not have amplification. Sound carries best on the main floor of the sanctuary, in areas that are not covered by the balcony. In June, the Vestry approved a hearing system which we hope will be implemented in the near future. |
