"Be kind to each another, tenderhearted, forgiving. Watch what you say. Make a clean break with all cutting, backbiting, profane talk. Say only what helps, each word a gift... Go ahead and be angry. You do well to be angry-but don't use your anger as fuel for revenge. And don't stay angry. Don't give anger that kind of foothold in your life."
Someone wrote those words more than 2000 years ago, but I keep re-reading them now - they could have been written to me.
Last week I preached about other advice written to the little church in Ephesus,
Turkey, in what we call "The Letter to the Ephesians." Like this week's words, last week's also were uncannily relevant; they track advice from a New York Times bestseller: Crucial Conversations. I commend the book to you. It offers wisdom on how to have a safe conversation about hard topics, when we feel strongly about them, the kind of conversation that so often trips us up.
|
I wonder, what would it take to be "kind, tenderhearted, forgiving" - including to
yourself? When is anger good, and how do we let it go, so it doesn't get a "foothold" within us?
After trying to wrestle with these questions on Sunday, on August 13th I'm heading out on vacation until August 31st. Shawn will preach on August 16, 23 and 30.
Many blessings to each of you, always.
-Joy

From the Bench
By Heinrich Christensen
|
Our soloist this Sunday is Thomas Gregg who will sing two psalm settings by James Hotchkiss Rogers (1857 - 1940), an American organist, composer, teacher, music critic, and publisher. Born in Fair Haven, Connecticut, his musical training was in Chicago and Europe, and he spent most of his professional life in Cleveland, Ohio. Many of his 130 songs are sacred, including the two selected for Sunday's service, published by the Arthur Schmidt Company of Boston in 1904 and 1908. Next November, as part of a Veterans Day recital, Dr. Gregg will perform the masterful song cycle "In Memoriam" that Rogers composed in memory of his fallen son in World War I.
The prelude will be César Franck's lovely Prélude, Fugue et Variation, and the postlude Max Reger's setting of the chorale Out of the Deep, reflecting both the title of the motet and our reading of Psalm 130.

Parishioners Helping Parishioners
This will be a new feature, from time to time. If the church has jobs that need to be done; you have skills to offer the church or one another; or you need some help, please let us know. This week:
Needed: A Good Used Affordable Car
A member of our congregation is in need of a new car, after the one she relies on recently became irreparable. If you have a reliable car you are looking to donate or sell, or if you have a car you would be willing to loan for several weeks, please contact the Parish House.
Wanted: Someone to video sermons periodically. Bill Sears is the only person currently taping sermons; if he can't be present, they aren't recorded. It's an easy
task for someone attending the Sunday morning service. We'll provide the equipment. Contact Joy Fallon, Shawn Fiedler or Julina Rundberg at the Parish House: joy@kings-chapel.org, shawn@kings-chapel.org, julina@kings-chapel.org

Accessibility and Hearing Assists
Our beautiful Georgian sanctuary designed by Peter Harrison and completed in 1754, has been lovingly maintained by the congregation since its completion. One of the box pews has been made wheel-chair accessible. Ushers are available to assist those who are wheelchair-bound to that pew.
Many of us have trouble hearing in our sanctuary, which does not have amplification. Sound carries best on the main floor of the sanctuary, in areas that are not covered by the balcony. In June, the Vestry approved a hearing system which we hope will be implemented in the near future. |
