Habitat for Humanity Build | June 20th

We are attempting to complete the roster of 10 for the June 20, 2015 (the last day of spring) King's Chapel Habitat for Humanity Boston build. The build runs from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM with a one hour lunch break. In the past the KC teams have enjoyed lunch at one of the local ethnic restaurants.

The build will be at the HFH Boston site now under construction at 38 Woodbine Street, Roxbury, MA 02119. Work will be available for all skill levels including none. For more information on HFH Boston and the site where they build go to http://www.habitatboston.org/ and http://www.habitatboston.org/projects.html

King's Chapel has supported HFH Boston both financially and with multiple volunteer efforts. We need 4 additional people to complete our team.  If you haven't done this before, please consider joining now. Each participant is asked to donate $40 to HFH Boston which will be matched by the KC Community Action Committee. If the donation is a hardship special accommodations will be considered.

To enroll or for more information contact Peter Sexton at 781-383-9028 or petersexton@alum.mit.edu.

From the Minister

I have to admit, I am quite disturbed by this week's Gospel passage. The disciples find themselves in a boat-tossed by a windstorm in the sea. In their fear and confusion, they wake Jesus and he calms the seas. But then Jesus says this: "Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?" I don't know about you, but I think I have a great deal of faith-and yet, I am still afraid. I am afraid of an ever changing world. I am afraid of a collapsing economy. I am afraid of religious extremism. And at times, I am even afraid of pain and death. Jesus' words haunt me, challenge me. Even with my faith, I still fear. Have I failed? Is my faith not enough? It might be that Jesus isn't referring to the same faith I think I have, but to a faith not simply understood or easily attained. Perhaps, a faith that stares fear head on-and doesn't even wince. The faith I want; the faith I need.

Memorial Service for Connaught O'Connell Mahony | June 26th

Our member Medb Mahony Sichko lost her mother, Connaught O'Connell Mahony, on Saturday, May 30th, after Connaught suffered a massive stroke.  Medb's father, Gael Mahony, died last November, so this is a time of grief for Medb.  She has told us that she greatly appreciates the love and support she receives from members of King's Chapel.  Medb can be reached atmedb.sichko@gmail.com. The memorial service for Connaught Mahony will be at Memorial Church in Harvard Yard, Cambridge, on Friday, June 26th, at 11:30 AM.

Meet the Guides: Taylor Hughes

Taylor returned to her hometown of Quincy two years ago after graduating with a BA in Anthropology from NYU. Since then she's worked in various positions, including the box office at a local theater company, another Freedom Trail site, and a short time as an EMT. She has always been interesting in the ways human attitudes towards death and mourning have changed throughout the ages and is excited to explore that more at King's Chapel! (Ask her about the Pleistocene!) She hopes to return to graduate studies in the future to study Early Modern History. When she's not working, Taylor likes hiking, photography, watching documentaries, and knitting.

From the Bench
By Heinrich Christensen
Our soloist this Sunday is Hannah McMeans who will offer Qui tollis peccata mundi from Bach's Mass in A Major, as well as Margaret Bonds' arrangement of the classic He's Got the Whole World in His Hands.

Heinrich will complete his Pictures at an Exhibition cycle with the remaining pictures:  Market Day in Limoges, Catacombs, the scary witch on chicken legs Baba-Yaga, and for the postlude The Great Gate of Kiev, which we now, thanks to Bill Kuttner, know is the Ukrainian equivalent of Land of Hope and Glory!
In case you missed any or all of the Pictures at an Exhibition, you can hear the complete cycle on
Wednesday June 24 at 8 pm when Heinrich gives a recital at the Methuen Memorial Music Hall
The hall houses the organ that was originally in the Boston Music Hall. If you have never been, it is absolutely worth the road trip just to see the magnificent hall and hear the organ.

Also on the program is Vitali's Chaconne and a Rheinberger Suite with the lovely violinist Jodi Hagen. Tickets are $12 and available at the door.

Sunday Forums Posted on Website

The Sunday Forums are now posted on the King's Chapel web site where the audio recording of each lecture may be heard in entirety.  The web page, Religion at King's Chapel - A Living Legacy, may be found under the Education tab on the home page of the web site.

The lectures were delivered on Sundays following Morning Prayer and each was well attended.  The speakers were the Reverend Dr. Carl Scovel, Dr. Daniel McKanan, and the Reverend Joy Fallon.  As planners of the forums, we were told repeatedly that the lectures were superb in content and delivery, that the overall series contributed significantly to understanding religious roots and contemporary religious practice, and that the conversation about our faith should be continued.

The Sunday Forums were co-sponsored by the Denominational and Ecumenical Affairs Committee and the Adult Religious Education Committee.  The moderators for the series were Clifford Allen, Denton Crews, Betsy Peterson, and Allen Speight. William Sears recorded the series in audio and video media.  Hostesses served generous refreshments in the foyer prior to each lecture, including Kathe German, Amy Meyer, Betsy Peterson, and Anne Sexton.

For further information or to offer comments, the committee chairs may be reached by phone or email.

Accessibility and Hearing Assists

Our beautiful Georgian sanctuary designed by Peter Harrison and completed in 1754, has been lovingly maintained by the congregation since its completion.  Some of the box pews have been made wheel-chair accessible.  Ushers are available to assist those who are wheelchair-bound to those pews.

Many of us have trouble hearing in our sanctuary, which does not have amplification.  Small hearing devices are available; an usher also will be happy to provide one, and explain how they work.

The Book of Common Prayer According to the Use in King's Chapel is the cornerstone of worship at our 11 am Morning Prayer Services.  Printed orders of service including hymns, Psalms, and responsive sections of the Prayer Book liturgy are available to facilitate participation in worship for everyone.
Flower Dedication Dates Available

King's Chapel has several dates open to those who wish to have a flower arrangement placed on the chancel, either in memory of a loved one or in celebration of a joyous event. For those interested in making a dedication, along with more information on the specific dates and prices, please contact Simon at the Parish House (Simon@kings-chapel.org/617-227-2155).
