From the Minister | Pentecost | Whitsunday
|
Fire appears only a handful of time in our scriptures. Moses encountered the fire that burned, but did not consume at the burning bush. The prophet Isaiah's lips were touched by fire enabling him to share the voice of God with those in exile. And of course, the fire at the birth of the Church. This coming Sunday, Christians across the world will celebrate what many call the birth of the Church: Pentecost. Marking fifty days after Easter, Pentecost commemorates the giving of the holy Spirit to those early followers of Jesus. Images of descending tongues of fire and rushing mighty winds fill our imagination as we hear again this ancient text. Touched with this fire that burns, but does not consume, the disciples were empowered to do mighty and wondrous tasks. These rushing flames, calling them to leave the comfort of their reality and to face new and remarkable experiences. That same Spirit burns on today-not consuming, but empowering. Can you hear it's crackling? Do you feel it's heat? I do.
Blessings,
Shawn

Thank You: Mother's Day Walk for Peace
Dear Friends, Walkers and Supporters of the Walk for Peace,
We're writing to express deep appreciation for your participation in the Mother's Day Walk for Peace. You probably know there were 15,000 people and 195 teams who walked. And if you haven't seen Clementina Chery's moving message of thanks., You can read it by searching Louis D Brown Peace Institute and clicking on the photos then"news and articles" and "'THANK YOU FOR MAKING HISTORY". She names the many kinds of communities who walked and says what we now know first-hand: "When we come together we are powerful beyond measure." And while she speaks of peace, she also speaks about violence, which she has seen and experienced.
For King's Chapel to be represented by 19 people walking together through Dorchester for peace was an extraordinary experience. We've known the compassionate side of our congregation, but this walk was a public caring, a reaching out across neighborhoods into the unfamiliar, discovering our mutual concerns and shared values. We also ,thanks to the generosity of King's Chapel and individual contributors raised $1548.00 Truly, it was a walk that made a difference - for us, for the victims and their families, and for the community as a whole.
At the end of the walk, we made our way back to ordinary living. But it seemed that we were touched by something beyond the ordinary, and if that's true we'd like to suggest that we exchange thoughts. If you'd be inclined, we'd like to hear about what you observed and felt. Who and what did you see? Did you feel connected to the cause of peace or the problem of gun violence? Were you thinking that we could be more engaged in this cause or other causes? Perhaps we can keep this flame alive in some way.
With gratitude for all peacemakers.

For our Pentecostal prelude, the choir will chant the ancient Sarum plainsong Veni Creator alternating with organ versets by French Baroque composer Nicolas de Grigny. Honoring our Anglican heritage, you will also hear a 16th century anthem by Christopher Tye.
Finally, we will set the choir's tongues on fire with spirited selections from Mozart's Missa Brevis in D for our communion music.

Godspeed & Farewell to Eva Englert
Eva Englert, who has been the King's Chapel Church School Director for the 2014-2015 year, will say farewell at the end of this month. Eva is currently a seminarian at Boston University School of Theology and is moving on to continue her ordination requirements in the United Methodist Church. Eva has been a wonderful presence in the Church School community and a valued member of the parish staff. We are grateful for everything she has done for us over the past year. We will bid her Farewell and Godspeed at our Children's Sunday Service on May 31st; All-Church Picnic to follow at the Parish House. In the coming weeks, a search committee will be assembled to explore and discern leadership for the 2015-2016 Church School year.
A Note from Eva:
Dear Beloved King's Chapel Community,
It has come time for me to let you all know that my last Sunday with King's Chapel will be Church School Sunday, May 31. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working with you all and our small but precious community of children and families at King's, but my seminary and ordination requirements will take me elsewhere this next school year. Thank you all for sharing the beautiful journey of faith with me this year; I have loved teaching and learning from your children and your presence. Thank you for your support of the Church School. It is a blessing to work and minister with you. With great gratitude and blessings, Eva Englert

Accessibility and Hearing Assists
Our beautiful Georgian sanctuary designed by Peter Harrison and completed in 1754, has been lovingly maintained by the congregation since its completion. Some of the box pews have been made wheel-chair accessible. Ushers are available to assist those who are wheelchair-bound to those pews.
Many of us have trouble hearing in our sanctuary, which does not have amplification. Small hearing devices are available; an usher also will be happy to provide one, and explain how they work.
The Book of Common Prayer According to the Use in King's Chapel is the cornerstone of worship at our 11 am Morning Prayer Services. Printed orders of service including hymns, Psalms, and responsive sections of the Prayer Book liturgy are available to facilitate participation in worship for everyone. |
Flower Dedication Dates Available
King's Chapel has several dates open to those who wish to have a flower arrangement placed on the chancel, either in memory of a loved one or in celebration of a joyous event. For those interested in making a dedication, along with more information on the specific dates and prices, please contact Simon at the Parish House (Simon@kings-chapel.org/617-227-2155). |
