"The Lord is my Shepherd...."
When you hear this phrase, what does it make you think of? For some of us, images from a childhood picture book come into view, or voices reading at a funeral. These first few words of the 23rd Psalm may evoke a feeling of peace, as if you're being held; or of yearning for something beyond you; or of sadness, tinged with a chill. The 23rd Psalm contains scenes of sheep lying beside still waters; a valley in shadow; a feast laid out upon a table; a cup full to the brim, running over from a generous pour.
What could this psalm mean for you this week, and for our world? It's the text we'll explore on Sunday. I look forward to exploring with you.
With many blessings, Joy

Annual Mother's Day Walk for Peace May 10th. Save the Date!
Have you ever wondered what you could do to help families who have suffered loss through violence? Join the King's Chapel team for the 19th Annual Mother's Day Walk for Peace on May 10th, 2105 from 8:00am to 10:00am in Field's Corner, Dorchester. The Walk is approximately 3.25 miles. Invite your friends & family!
This event supports families of the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute who have lost children and other members to violence. In February, our guest preacher was the organization's director Tina Chery, who shared the story of losing her son, Louis Brown, to violence and the resulting establishment of the institute.
This organization aids families in the immediate aftermath of a loss and offers support throughout the process. They also have a peace curriculum which they teach to children in the Boston public school system.
For more information or to join the team, please contact Carol Genovese at "carol.m.genovese@gmail.com." |

The Unitarian Religion of King's Chapel | Save the Date | May 17th
Presented by Dr. Daniel McKanan, Senior Lecturer, Harvard Divinity School
After the American Revolution, King's Chapel became the first Unitarian Church in the New World. This lecture will examine the roots of Unitarianism in Europe and the evolution of religious tolerance and reason in faith and practice. How the Chapel adopted Christian Unitarian theology and its contribution to religious thought and post-colonial independence will also be examined, together with how this identity has been sustained even as American Unitarianism has expanded outside the Christian faith.

Audio/Sound Committee Update
As reported at the Annual Meeting, the committee, which includes Cliff Allen, John Bowman, Heinrich Christiansen, Shawn Fiedler, Bill Sears, Medb Sichko, Dan Taylor, and co-chairs Dick and Cynthia Perkins, is focusing on the need to increase our accessibility and enable everyone to hear the spoken word. We recognize that the choir and organ need no amplification. The committee members are now refining our research and narrowing in on our preferred options for a sound system. Based on discussions with members of the parish which have helped to define the needs, and meetings with three different professional sound companies, and a recent trial run of an audio system, the committee is hoping to have a recommendation to the Vestry soon.
A new system should enable those who want to participate in services to be heard:
- Our minister has made it clear that we need to provide assistance to those who speak at weddings, funerals; that is, any who seek out King's Chapel for special services and who cannot be heard without a microphone.
- The systems should support the participation of our children, and seniors who may have weaker voices, first-time readers who may not be able to project their voices, and those who are making announcements or offering personal testimonies.
- A well designed system would enable our ministers, lectors, and lay-readers to use a natural and gentler voice for prayers, readings, and announcements.
- It is also important that we have a system that can make a clear recording of our service for use by members who may be traveling or are unable to attend due to illness or other reasons.
After visiting more than 8 churches with architecture and soundscape similar to our own, and speaking with 7 sound professionals, we have narrowed down three companies that have given us their proposals for a sound system that will meet the criteria.
We have planned to focus on a three-step program:
- The whole committee agrees that assistive listening equipment is clearly required and we should move forward to accomplish this task, which will give those with significant hearing loss the capacity to have clear sound, either through their hearing aids or through small devices to be made available as they enter the church.
- Our second step will be to install a single source speaker system which will provide enhanced sound coverage for the majority of the main sanctuary. This will be very helpful to those who often miss words or do not find clarity in the speaking voices of the clergy or readers. We would propose to have this system installed concurrently with the assistive listening system.
- We will hold in abeyance the full-church wiring with multi-speaker outputs, as originally recommended, until and unless we determine steps one and two do not provide the solution to our clear present needs.
The equipment needed for the assistive listening systems and the single source speaker will be appropriate to step three and will be already installed and applicable for add-on speakers.
A trial run during the week following Easter allowed us to test a temporary sound system. Installation was requested by John Appleton so that all who gathered for the memorial service to celebrate the life of his beloved wife, Sarah Appleton, could hear the speakers. The amplification was a success for this service. We were also able to use the system the following day, Sunday, April 12, for the Sunday Forum talk given by the Rev. Carl Scovel. Many people reported that the individuals who made the announcements and introductions, as well as Carl, could be heard easily without missing words or straining to hear; some even said this was a first for them at King's Chapel. Although a couple of people found the sound unnatural for their liking, we feel that with this first trail run we're on the right track to a workable solution.
In several ways this trial run was helpful. 1) first to know that a simple system, i.e., one central speaker might provide us with coverage we need; 2) that although the sound is different than natural sound, with adjustments made it could be very the helpful; and 3) the speakers were able to talk or read without straining to project their voices.
The committee is meeting this week to test yet another sound system approach.
We appreciate the support shown from our members, as well as the questions asked. We hope the members will be patient, perhaps listening to yet another trail run, with the knowledge that we're getting closer to the making an informed recommendation to Vestry. We should add that the committee is working diligently to find the best system at the best cost.
If you'd like to share your thoughts, please send them to Dick or Cynthia Perkins, co-chairs, by email (cbhperkins@earthlink.net).
~ Thanks, Dick and Cynthia Perkins |
Hosting Coffee at King's Chapel
Dear Friends:
If you have not yet hosted morning coffee, or "Punch on the Bricks", the Hospitality
Committee wants you to know how much we would love to have your participation in this Sunday ritual. Serving hospitality after Morning Prayer is one more way for church members to greet one another and welcome guests to our beautiful chapel.
Many of your fellow parishioners have assisted us in providing hospitality following Morning Prayer over the past three years, and now we are reaching out to others who may be willing to perform this simple task. If you would like to help, but would prefer to have a partner, please let us know we will be thrilled to "match you up" with a partner to assist with the effort.
The needs of our small congregation are humble: simple food and drink with an opportunity for fellowship after the service. Coffee is served October through Memorial Day, and "Punch on the Bricks" is served from June through September, weather permitting of course.
If this request has whetted you appetite, please respond enthusiastically to either Anne or Sally. We await your response with great anticipation.
With warmest wishes,
Anne Sexton Hospitality Committee Chair

Accessibility and Hearing Assists

Our beautiful Georgian sanctuary designed by Peter Harrison and completed in 1754, has been lovingly maintained by the congregation since its completion. Some of the box pews have been made wheel-chair accessible. Ushers are available to assist those who are wheelchair-bound to those pews.
Many of us have trouble hearing in our sanctuary, which does not have amplification. Small hearing devices are available; an usher also will be happy to provide one, and explain how they work.
The Book of Common Prayer According to the Use in King's Chapel is the cornerstone of worship at our 11 am Morning Prayer Services. Printed orders of service including hymns, Psalms, and responsive sections of the Prayer Book liturgy are available to facilitate participation in worship for everyone. |
