Easter Flower Dedications
It's not too late! But soon it will be. The last day for Easter Flower Dedications is Thursday, April 2nd!
Every year for Easter, our sanctuary is beautifully decorated with tulips, daffodils, hydrangeas and other exuberant signs of spring. After the record-breaking snowfall we've had this year, it's certainly something to look forward to!
This year's budget, however, relies more heavily on dedications from members and friends of King's Chapel to fund the decoration of the church.
If you would like to contribute flowers for the Easter Service as a memorial to a loved one, please send to the Parish House:
1) the name of individuals you wish to honor or remember
2) your name, address, phone number and email
3) a check ($50/ per Easter Memorial Plant) with "Easter Flowers" in the memo line

Sunday Forum with Carl Scovel
April 12, 12:30 p.m.
On Sunday, April 12, The Reverend Carl Scovel will speak on "The Anglican Religion of King's Chapel." His lecture will explore how the congregation was founded by the Church of England in a time of religious turmoil and kept the loyalist traditions throughout the provincial period of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and subsequently, even in the midst of the dominant Puritans and Separatists. The contemporary legacy of Anglican religious practice in the Chapel will also be addressed.
Dr. Carl Scovel was the Senior Minister of King's Chapel from 1967 to 1999. He was Minister of First Parish in Sudbury 1957-1967. Growing up in China with medical missionary parents, he returned to the U.S. and graduated from Oberlin (undergraduate) and Harvard (graduate). While serving as Minister of King's Chapel, he became a leader in Unitarian Universalist affairs such as the UU Christian Fellowship, delivered lectures such as the Berry Street Lecture, and published extensively.
Three lectures are scheduled this spring on the theme, The Religion of King's Chapel: A Living Legacy, exploring how King's Chapel became an independent, religiously tolerant church with strong Anglican and Christian Unitarian roots and continues these traditions in its fourth century. Additional lectures will be May 17 with Dr. Daniel McKanan of Harvard Divinity School on the Unitarian Religion of King's Chapel" and June 14 with The Reverend Joy Fallon on the "Independent Religion of King's Chapel."

Save the Date! Annual Mother's Day Walk for Peace May 10th
Have you ever wondered what you could do to help families who have suffered loss through violence? Join the King's Chapel team for the 19th Annual Mother's Day Walk for Peace on May 10th, 2105 from 8:00am to 10:00am in Field's Corner, Dorchester. The Walk is approximately 3.25 miles. This event supports families of the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute who have lost children and other members to violence. This organization aids families in the immediate aftermath of a loss and offers support throughout the process. They also have a peace curriculum which they teach to children in the Boston public school system.

Senior Warden Cliff Allen receives awards from the New England Alumni Club of his alma mater
From Cliff: I accepted an award from the college President on behalf of the New England Alumni club as best regional alumni club in the country. Later I received a second award, The "General Pete Award" as the most outstanding alumni volunteer for 2014-2015. The Pete dude you have never heard of was General Peter Gabriel Muhlenberg who was an aide to George Washington during the winter spent at Valley Forge -- probably a volunteer himself.

As usual, we have a veritable cornucopia of music for Holy Week and Easter.
For our Wednesday evening service, cantor Hannah McMeans will sing the spiritual Were You There as the anthem.
On Maundy Thursday at 6, soloist Claire Shepro will sing selections from Bach's St. Matthew Passion and B minor Mass, as well as Daniel Pinkham's Missa Mandatum Novum, written specifically for this service in 2000.
Friday at noon, tenor Eric Ferring will sing Georges Bizet's Agnus Dei, and Samuel Barber's Crucifixion.
On Friday evening, our soloists in Daniel Pinkham's Responsories for the Service of Tenebrae will be tenor Sean Lair and baritone Adam Simon.
For the Easter Vigil at 8 PM on Holy Saturday, the whole choir will be in the loft to sing the traditional music arranged from the Orthodox tradition by Anna Gallos. Daniel Perry will be the cantor this year.
And finally on Easter morning, the organ voluntaries will include Toccatas by Bach & Widor, as well as the traditional Alleluia by Randall Thompson, the festive Sing Ye to the Lord by Edward Bairstow, Pinkham's Now is the Hour of Darkness Past, Calvin Hampton's A Repeating Alleluia, as well as communion music from Franz Schubert's Mass in G Major.

Dear Church School Family,
I can remember quite clearly the Easters of my childhood: waking to a chocolate bunny by my bed, putting on a brighter, nicer dress than usual, attending services with my family, and enjoying a meal of ham and vegetables with my extended family for Easter dinner.
These Easter memories are lovely, but as I have gotten older I have come to appreciate the mystery, wonder, and, even the holy darkness of Holy Week in the days preceding this joyous holiday. It wasn't until I was in upper elementary or middle school when I began attending Maundy Thursday and Good Friday services at the churches where my mother ministered, and it wasn't until after college during my time serving at an Episcopal church when I experienced the Holy Tridium: MaundyThursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday (Easter Vigil). Even when the story we hear and remember, of a divine Jewish man executed by Roman authorities who then rose from the dead, makes little logical sense to me, I drop into the deepest truth I know about this mystery: that it tells of love profound. In this assurance I find God's solidarity with those who suffer, God's challenge to build the kingdom which invites all regardless of social position and requires love of neighbor and enemy, and- perhaps above all- God's promise that though death clings, life is the final word.
I look forward to celebrating Easter with you all this Sunday, at 11:00 at the chapel. Don't forget to bring your baskets and bags for the church school egg hunt afterward!
Grace and Peace, Eva Englert Church School Director

Accessibility and Hearing Assists
|
Our beautiful Georgian sanctuary designed by Peter Harrison and completed in 1754, has been lovingly maintained by the congregation since its completion. Some of the box pews have been made wheel-chair accessible. Ushers are available to assist those who are wheelchair-bound to those pews.
Many of us have trouble hearing in our sanctuary, which does not have amplification. Small hearing devices are available; an usher also will be happy to provide one, and explain how they work.
The Book of Common Prayer According to the Use in King's Chapel is the cornerstone of worship at our 11 am Morning Prayer Services. Printed orders of service including hymns, Psalms, and responsive sections of the Prayer Book liturgy are available to facilitate participation in worship for everyone. |
