Spotlight On: Kate Braestrup
|
Don't miss the 2014 Minns Lectures at King's Chapel and First Church Boston, November 7-9.
|
Bestselling author and UU minister Kate Braestrup talks about men, women, and children...and how to love one another in a complicated world. A chaplain to the Maine Warden Service, Kate won the hearts of readers across the country with her award-winning memoir Here If You Need Me, a deeply moving account of finding God by helping others who were lost, hurt, or searching for those who were in the wilds of Maine. Since then, she has continued to write, speak, and preach with compassion, wisdom and humor about the big issues in life - marriage and family, faith, love, loss, and the presence of God in it all. Her talks in November could not be more timely as issues of domestic abuse and parent-child relations top the national agenda. Read more about Kate HERE.
Kate will speak on the topic of "Men" at King's Chapel on Friday, November 7 at 7 pm, on "Women" at First Church Boston on Saturday, November 8 at 10 am, and on "Children" at First Church Boston on Saturday, November 8 at 12:30 pm. She will also deliver a concluding sermon at King's Chapel on Sunday, November 8, at the 11 am Morning Prayer service. Get further details and register to attend these free lectures HERE.

This Sunday: Handel, the Red Sea, and New Members
What do you do when caught between two awful choices - or have no real choice at all? When you're the defenseless Israelite slave, just escaped from Egypt, now camped at the edge of the sea -- and you suddenly hear the thudding of Pharaoh's chariots charging toward you? They've broken their promise to you, as people do, and you've been caught vulnerable. You're trapped between a powerful enemy and the sea, with no boat.
Do you feel fury at whatever made you think you should try something new? Complete confusion about next steps? Weary acceptance, giving up hope?
Or might you recall another time, when you found a way through - completely unexpected, unanticipated, like waters that you'd feared, somehow parting?
When Moses had no idea what to do, God said "Why are you calling out to me?" It was hardly the touchy- feely compassionate response one might want from one's God. And then this directive: "Go forward."
Somehow it took a partnership to get where they needed to go: the people trusting, moving forward, starting to walk into a sea, plus God's breakthrough, somehow creating a way when none had been imaginable before.
For a moment, forget Cecil B. DeMille's theatrics. The real question is: could this be true for you? Come and explore with us this Sunday.

--By Heinrich Christensen
This Sunday, the music is inspired by the Old Testament lesson from Exodus. The choir and soloist Sean Lair will sing selections from Handel's great dramatic oratorioIsrael in Egypt. You will hear fantastic musical depictions of the Israelites sighing in bondage, Moses rebuking the Red Sea, leading his people though the deep, and overwhelming the enemy! As an added bonus, there will be a preview of the afternoon concert, namely the first movement of Howells' Requiem, Salvator mundi:
"O Saviour of the world, who by thy cross and thy precious blood has redeemed us, save us and help us, we humbly beseech thee, O Lord."

On Sunday November 9th, all donations not designated for the King's Chapel Annual Appeal will be given to the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless.
The Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless advocates for those experiencing or at risk for homelessness in public policy, offers public education about homelessness and its solution, and provides material assistance to programs that serve the homeless population. |
This past Sunday, the King's Chapel Church School explored the desert again, as we recounted and learned about God's covenant with the people of Israel through the Ten Commandments, or what the Godly Play curriculum names the Ten Best Ways. When the people we're liberated from oppression in Egypt, they needed a way to move forward- to be ushered into a way of life which would both invite them into community and hold them accountable to living in ways that exemplified God's love and justice.
My favorite part of this lesson is the emphasis on relationship between God and God's people. I think the Ten Commandments are too often presented in such a way that makes them a list of "do" and "do not." I was also impressed by the children's ability to interpret, with the help and thoughtful contribution of music leader Kade (who assisted me in class), the Ten Best Ways into guidelines for their own lives today. What does it mean to respect our parents and guardians? What are some of the idols we have a tendency to worship today? we wondered together. The morning closed in a time of fellowship and pumpkin-carving.
May God be with us as we continue to learn how to be in communion with God and our greater human family.
With peace and gratitude, Eva Englert Church School Director |
Please join us on Tuesday, October 28, 12:15 p.m. as the Windsbacher Boys Choir sings Sacred & Secular German Songs.

Accessibility and Hearing Assists
|
Our beautiful Georgian sanctuary designed by Peter Harrison and completed in 1754, has been lovingly maintained by the congregation since its completion. Some of the box pews have been made wheel-chair accessible. Ushers are available to assist those who are wheelchair-bound to those pews.
Many of us have trouble hearing in our sanctuary, which does not have amplification. Small hearing devices are available; an usher also will be happy to provide one, and explain how they work.
The Book of Common Prayer According to the Use in King's Chapel is the cornerstone of worship at our 11 am Morning Prayer Services. Printed orders of service including hymns, Psalms, and responsive sections of the Prayer Book liturgy are available to facilitate participation in worship for everyone. |
Chancel Flowers: Donors Needed!

There are several upcoming dates available for Chancel Flower donations in November. If you would like to offer a dedication in honor or memory of a loved one, please contact the Parish House.

Unitarian Free Thought: A tradition of people exploring and choosing
|
Last Sunday after Church, our preacher, the Rev. Mark Caggiano, minister at First Parish Church in Chestnut Hill, met with us to explore the place of Christianity within the Unitarian Universalist Association today. Mark is a Trustee of the Council of Christian Churches within the UUA (CCCUUA). Both First Parish and King's Chapel are members of this organization. Mark talked about many issues, including this central proposition: we trust humans to use their reason to consider different interpretations of scripture and other resources; we do not dictate creeds that all must believe. To learn more, or suggest avenues for further exploration, contact Denton Crews, Chair, Denominational Affairs.
