Announcing New Church School Director Eva Englert
We are very pleased to welcome our new Church School Director, Eva Englert.  Eva has been hard at work this week, preparing the Parish House and Little Chapel to welcome children and families back to Church School on Homecoming Sunday next week.  A note from Eva:

Hello!

I am Eva Englert, a born-and-raised Texan and Bostonian in the making. I am very excited to be a part of the King's Chapel community as the Church School Director! Working with children is one of my biggest passions, and I so look forward to working with the King's Chapel staff and congregation in strengthening the program and its beautifully deep roots while also exploring the exciting world of new dreams, ideas and ways of being!

I am also in my first year as a Masters of Divinity student at Boston University School of Theology, where I hope to continue making connections between faith, social and environmental justice, and leadership development. I am a candidate for ordained ministry in the United Methodist Church, and am also deeply interested in ecumenical collaboration. I graduated from Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas in May of 2012, where I majored in Environmental Studies and minored in Religious Studies. I grew up in Dallas, Texas, where my mother is appointed as the senior pastor of First United Methodist Church, Garland. When I'm not studying or working, I enjoy drinking coffee, cooking, gardening and the outdoors, exploring New England, writing, spending time with my lovely roommates and friends, and singing with a small a cappella group in Brookline.  I look forward to meeting all of you soon!
And if you haven't already... Meet Shawn Fiedler!
Shawn Fiedler, Assistant Minister, Headshot for introduction to congregation

Please join the staff, vestry, and congregation in welcoming Shawn Fiedler as King's Chapel's new Assistant Minister.  Shawn moved into his new residence on the fifth floor of the Parish House on Tuesday this week, and officially begins his ministry with us on Tuesday, September 2nd.  At King's Chapel, Shawn will be participating in religious education, preaching, pastoral care, worship leadership, and church growth.  We are thrilled to have him join the team.

Shawn has returned to New England after having engaged in intentional volunteer service with the Episcopal Church in Seattle, Washington. He is a graduate of Bridgewater State University where he earned a BA in Political Science, as well as, BU School of Theology where he earned a Masters of Divinity. Shawn previously served as Pastoral Fellow at Old South Church in Copley Square, as a hospital chaplain intern at BI Deaconess, and worked with HousingWorks Inc., a social justice software organization which aims to reduce or eliminate barriers to subsidized or affordable housing.

Though Shawn is a native of Maryland, he considers himself a true New Englander.  A lover of historic New England architecture, he also loves walks around the Chestnut Hill Reservoir, cardigans, Autumn, and all the Boston classics: Boston Pops on the 4th of July, the MFA, the Red Sox.  Shawn is the son of two police officers and a proud uncle to three.  He was raised in the Roman Catholic tradition, discovered New England Protestantism in college, has deeply explored the Anglican liturgy and will be ordained in the UCC on October 4th.  Please reach out and introduce yourself to Shawn as we look forward to an exciting year together!  He can be reached at [email protected].

Labyrinth Walk  and Potluck Lunch at the Perkinses, Saturday September 27th, 10:30am-1:30pm
Come for a quiet, meditative walk in the Labyrinth that Cynthia and Dick Perkins have built on their beautiful property in Stow, about 45" from KC. Labyrinths are ancient contemplative settings, and unlike a maze, you cannot get lost. Rather, the object is to mindfully follow the one path, and it always leads to the Center where you may find an answer, where you may find you leave a worry behind.

RSVP to Cynthia Perkins, [email protected]. Let her know what you'd like to bring for lunch, and whether you can offer a ride or need one. We'll arrange carpools.
Your Spiritual Journey, led by Senior Minister the Rev. Joy Fallon
8 sessions: Monday evenings, 6-8 pm
October 6,20,27; November 3, 10, 17, 24; December 1
(Note there will be no class on the Monday of Columbus Day weekend, Oct. 13)

Easy writing prompts will help explore different ways you may have experienced the Spirit in your life, during different seasons, and through these small vignettes, will open the door into your personal spiritual journey. Members will share their experiences with others in the group, in a confidential setting, and each write their Spiritual Autobiography, as they now understand it.

Even if you have taken the Spiritual Autobiography course in the past, consider taking it again, to discover at another level, now at a later time in your life, how God has been present or absent, how God may be seeking to catch your attention and enrich you further.

Please inform the Parish House (617 227-2155) or email Joy, [email protected], if you are interested; class size will be limited. (You will need to make every effort to attend all sessions and do the writing exercises, in order to make the experience valuable for all participants).
Community Action Committee: Upcoming Service/Learning Opportunities
When was the last time you did some hands-on volunteer service? As we enjoy a relaxing summer, perhaps you'll think about making a commitment now to a few hours of active service in September. Active service helps us learn and refreshes our spirits, different from giving money or service to our own church or personal interests. Contact Amy Meyer for more information about opportunities to participate in Community Action events this fall.
Alden Palermo Memorial Build-Cape Town, South Africa
Peter Sexton is leading a Habitat for Humanity Global Village build to Cape Town, South Africa starting May 22, 2015. This build is being dedicated to the memory of Alden Palermo who tragically passed away recently. Five members of the King's Chapel community are participating in this activity. As we go to press there are 2 unfilled positions on the team. If you have any interest, please contact Peter Sexton, [email protected]  or 781 383-9028.
News from the Parish:

Karen Cord Taylor releases her new book: Legendary Locals of Beacon Hill
A Note from Karen:

As some of you know, I was asked to create Legendary Locals of Beacon Hill, a book of photographs and stories about the people who have helped Beacon Hill begin, grow, prosper and make it the historic, walkable, friendly, quirky place I have lived in for more years than I ever thought possible. I finished the book in March, and it will be out in early September, published by Arcadia Publishing.

Some of you are in the book. Some of you helped me with facts, history and access to photos. Some of you lent me your photos, which I will now return since I know the photos I submitted worked. I had a marvelous time interviewing residents, hearing their stories and putting them and their antecedents into 128 pages.

Catch Karen at the West End Branch Library on Thursday September 25th at 6:30 pm.  Karen will give a talk illustrated with photos and stories from teh book and some photos that were not included in the book.

Our Congregation Big and Small

Heinrich playing the prelude at Morning Prayer
--By Heinrich Christensen

Our soloist this week is Mindy Hinkel. As a special treat on this final Sunday before Homecoming, Mindy will bring along violinist Robert Miskey to accompany her in arias by J.S. Bach. Robert will also play a Bach Sonata for the prelude. Mindy and Robert have already collaborated a number of times at First Church in Sharon, where Robert is an active member and Mindy's husband Brett Hinkel serves as music director.

Robert Miskey is a master performer and teacher with over 30 years experience as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral performer holding major symphony and concertmaster positions. He has extensive experience helping serious students realize their maximum potential as well as cultivating a true love of fine music. Robert obtained his Master's of Music degree in performance from world renowned Indiana University where he studied under Franco Gulli and Joseph Gingold.

Accessibility and Hearing Assists
Our beautiful Georgian sanctuary designed by Peter Harrison and completed in 1754, has been lovingly maintained by the congregation since its completion.  Some of the box pews have been made wheel-chair accessible.  Ushers are available to assist those who are wheelchair-bound to those pews.

Many of us have trouble hearing in our sanctuary, which does not have amplification.  Small hearing devices are available; an usher also will be happy to provide one, and explain how they work.

The Book of Common Prayer According to the Use in King's Chapel is the cornerstone of worship at our 11 am Morning Prayer Services.  Printed orders of service including hymns, Psalms, and responsive sections of the Prayer Book liturgy are available to facilitate participation in worship for everyone.

Annual Appeal: Time to Mobilize!

1.  $100,000  Already Raised - an Extraordinary Start - but Saddle Up

In the June Newsletter, we pointed out that the Appeal was ahead of schedule.  But get this - from the latest Bookkeeper's information, July closed with an Appeal increase of more than $28,000 in new donations!  The total we have given is slightly more than $100,000 (58%) of the $172,000 goal.  This is a much better end-of-summer contribution percentage than the Appeal has ever had!  Nevertheless, we all know it is time to saddle-up again for the fall campaign.

2.  Start Now

With $72,000 in contributions still to raise, harvest, shake from the trees, prune, complete pledges, capture from unsolicited sources, as well as pray for - there is still a good deal to do to reach the stated goal.  That's in the next four months before we close on December 31.  So with Homecoming in the third week of September, on 9/21, we need to start now - perhaps using that occasion to announce how well we are doing.

3.  Participation

We do have 100% Pledge participation from the Vestry and Trustees.  We do have remarkable increases in Pledge amounts (many to the next level), as well as in the percentage of the core group pledging.  So now we will need to fine-comb through the reluctant and elusive to encourage them to pledge and...uhh..contribute, of course.

4.  Real Goal

And there is also that stretch goal out there of $200,000 that we would really like to raise this year...an affirmation of our ministry and leadership.  With all the energy, good feeling and recommitment that's gonna happen his fall...oh, yeah!  We should be able to do it!

Cheers and Blessings,

Todd & Karen
