Annual Appeal: Time to Mobilize!

1.  $100,000  Already Raised - an Extraordinary Start - but Saddle Up

In the June Newsletter, we pointed out that the Appeal was ahead of schedule.  But get this - from the latest Bookkeeper's information, July closed with an Appeal increase of more than $28,000 in new donations!  The total we have given is slightly more than $100,000 (58%) of the $172,000 goal.  This is a much better end-of-summer contribution percentage than the Appeal has ever had!  Nevertheless, we all know it is time to saddle-up again for the fall campaign.

2.  Start Now

With $72,000 in contributions still to raise, harvest, shake from the trees, prune, complete pledges, capture from unsolicited sources, as well as pray for - there is still a good deal to do to reach the stated goal.  That's in the next four months before we close on December 31.  So with Homecoming in the third week of September, on 9/21, we need to start now - perhaps using that occasion to announce how well we are doing.

3.  Participation

We do have 100% Pledge participation from the Vestry and Trustees.  We do have remarkable increases in Pledge amounts (many to the next level), as well as in the percentage of the core group pledging.  So now we will need to fine-comb through the reluctant and elusive to encourage them to pledge and...uhh..contribute, of course.

4.  Real Goal

And there is also that stretch goal out there of $200,000 that we would really like to raise this year...an affirmation of our ministry and leadership.  With all the energy, good feeling and recommitment that's gonna happen his fall...oh, yeah!  We should be able to do it!

Cheers and Blessings,

Todd & Karen

Meet Shawn Fiedler
Shawn Fiedler, Assistant Minister, Headshot for introduction to congregation

Please join the staff, vestry, and congregation in welcoming Shawn Fiedler as King's Chapel's new Assistant Minister.  Shawn moved into his new residence on the fifth floor of the Parish House on Tuesday this week, and officially begins his ministry with us on Tuesday, September 2nd.  At King's Chapel, Shawn will be participating in religious education, preaching, pastoral care, worship leadership, and church growth.  We are thrilled to have him join the team.

Shawn has returned to New England after having engaged in intentional volunteer service with the Episcopal Church in Seattle, Washington. He is a graduate of Bridgewater State University where he earned a BA in Political Science, as well as, BU School of Theology where he earned a Masters of Divinity. Shawn previously served as Pastoral Fellow at Old South Church in Copley Square, as a hospital chaplain intern at BI Deaconess, and worked with HousingWorks Inc., a social justice software organization which aims to reduce or eliminate barriers to subsidized or affordable housing.

Though Shawn is a native of Maryland, he considers himself a true New Englander.  A lover of historic New England architecture, he also loves walks around the Chestnut Hill Reservoir, cardigans, Autumn, and all the Boston classics: Boston Pops on the 4th of July, the MFA, the Red Sox.  Shawn is the son of two police officers and a proud uncle to three.  He was raised in the Roman Catholic tradition, discovered New England Protestantism in college, has deeply explored the Anglican liturgy and will be ordained in the UCC on October 4th.  Please reach out and introduce yourself to Shawn as we look forward to an exciting year together!  He can be reached at shawn@kings-chapel.org.

Pastoral Vacation and Study Leave
Is over!   Joy is back, well-rested and ready for a busy Fall.
News from the Parish House: A Fond Farewell to Jessica Stewart
Current Administrative Assistant Jessica Stewart will no longer be sitting at the front desk nor putting together the Orders of Service for Morning Prayer. However, you will still see her at the chapel as a guide and a verger, as well as acting as the go-to Parish House verger. Her last week is the first week of September, but it's not completely good-bye!

Other Parish House staff are deeply grateful to Jess for her calm professionalism, her kindness, her reliability, and her steady presence during her two+ years of service to us.  She has demonstrated grace in managing many transitions during the last several years and has been flexible and adaptive in working under many different leaders.  Thank you, Jess!

Labyrinth Walk  and Potluck Lunch at the Perkinses, Saturday September 27th, 10:30am-1:30pm
Come for a quiet, meditative walk in the Labyrinth that Cynthia and Dick Perkins have built on their beautiful property in Stow, about 45" from KC. Labyrinths are ancient contemplative settings, and unlike a maze, you cannot get lost. Rather, the object is to mindfully follow the one path, and it always leads to the Center where you may find an answer, where you may find you leave a worry behind.

RSVP to Cynthia Perkins, cbhperkins@earthlink.net. Let her know what you'd like to bring for lunch, and whether you can offer a ride or need one. We'll arrange carpools.

Community Action Committee: Upcoming Service/Learning Opportunities
When was the last time you did some hands-on volunteer service? As we enjoy a relaxing summer, perhaps you'll think about making a commitment now to a few hours of active service in September. Active service helps us learn and refreshes our spirits, different from giving money or service to our own church or personal interests. Contact Amy Meyer for more information about opportunities to participate in Community Action events this fall.
Habitat for Humanity Boston Build: September 13, 9-3:30
With only one week left before next weekend's Habitat for Humanity Boston build, there are currently eight registered participants and the group needs 2 or three more.  If you've been thinking about participating, now's the time to commit!  Please contact Peter Sexton for more information or to sign up.

What could be more rewarding than helping a family build their own home? No special skills are required beyond willingness and the ability to follow directions. This is all about helping, being part of a project with a very tangible result, a home for someone who needs it.  There is a fee of $40 per participant for materials.

If you would like to participate but need financial assistance, please contact Rev. Fallon.
Alden Palermo Memorial Build-Cape Town, South Africa
Peter Sexton is leading a Habitat for Humanity Global Village build to Cape Town, South Africa starting May 22, 2015. This build is being dedicated to the memory of Alden Palermo who tragically passed away recently. Five members of the King's Chapel community are participating in this activity. As we go to press there are 2 unfilled positions on the team. If you have any interest, please contact Peter Sexton, petersexton@alum.mit.edu  or 781 383-9028.

From the Bench
This week, our soloist is Denise Konicek. She will sing three songs written by local composer Gabriella Snyder. These songs were premiered by Denise and Heinrich at a 2010 benefit concert for the UUA Renewal House, a shelter for victims of domestic violence. For the project, Gabriella chose three texts by women authors from our hymnal. The poets selected were Anne Brontė, Eliza Scudder, and Edna Dow Cheney's At First I Prayed for Light:

At first I prayed for light:
Could I but see the way,
How gladly, swiftly would I walk
To everlasting day!

And next I prayed for strength:
That I might tread the road
With firm, unfaltering feet, and win
The heavens' serene abode.

And then I prayed for faith:
Could I but trust my God,
I'd live infolded in His peace,
Though foes were all abroad.

But now I pray for love:
Deep love to God and man;
A living love that will not fail,
However dark His plan.

And light and strength and faith
Are opening everywhere!
God waited patiently until
I prayed the larger prayer.

Ednah Dow Littlehale Cheney (June 27, 1824 - November 19, 1904) was a writer, reformer, and philanthropist, born on Beacon Hill, Boston to Sargent Smith Littledale and Ednah Parker (Dow). She was educated in private schools in Boston. She was secretary of the School of Design for Women from 1851 till 1854.

She married portrait artist Seth Wells Cheney on May 19, 1853. His ill health limited his volume of work and after a winter trip abroad (1854-1855) he died in 1856. They had one child, Margaret Swan Cheney (September 8, 1855 - September 22, 1882) Edna's daughter, Margaret Swan Cheney died of tuberculosis while a student in the 1882 class at MIT and a reception room of the Women's Chemistry Laboratory was named in her memory.

After her husband's death she took an interest in social concerns such as the Freedman's Aid Society (secretary of the committee on aid for colored regiments and of the teachers' committee, 1863), Massachusetts Woman Suffrage Association (vice president), New England Women's Club (vice president) and the New England Hospital for Women and Children (secretary, 1862). She lectured at the Concord School of Philosophy on the history of art. She was an active member of the Margaret Fuller conversation class.

Accessibility and Hearing Assists
Our beautiful Georgian sanctuary designed by Peter Harrison and completed in 1754, has been lovingly maintained by the congregation since its completion.  Some of the box pews have been made wheel-chair accessible.  Ushers are available to assist those who are wheelchair-bound to those pews.

Many of us have trouble hearing in our sanctuary, which does not have amplification.  Small hearing devices are available; an usher also will be happy to provide one, and explain how they work.

The Book of Common Prayer According to the Use in King's Chapel is the cornerstone of worship at our 11 am Morning Prayer Services.  Printed orders of service including hymns, Psalms, and responsive sections of the Prayer Book liturgy are available to facilitate participation in worship for everyone.
