Between Sundays
Keeping King's Chapel's members, friends, and subscribed visitors connected each week between Sunday worship services with updates from the Parish House.
Meet Shawn Fiedler
Shawn Fiedler, Assistant Minister, Headshot for introduction to congregation

Please join the staff, vestry, and congregation in welcoming Shawn Fiedler as King's Chapel's new Assistant Minister.  Shawn moved into his new residence on the fifth floor of the Parish House on Tuesday this week, and officially begins his ministry with us on Tuesday, September 2nd.  At King's Chapel, Shawn will be participating in religious education, preaching, pastoral care, worship leadership, and church growth.  We are thrilled to have him join the team.

Shawn has returned to New England after having engaged in intentional volunteer service with the Episcopal Church in Seattle, Washington. He is a graduate of Bridgewater State University where he earned a BA in Political Science, as well as, BU School of Theology where he earned a Masters of Divinity. Shawn previously served as Pastoral Fellow at Old South Church in Copley Square, as a hospital chaplain intern at BI Deaconess, and worked with HousingWorks Inc., a social justice software organization which aims to reduce or eliminate barriers to subsidized or affordable housing.

Though Shawn is a native of Maryland, he considers himself a true New Englander.  A lover of historic New England architecture, he also loves walks around the Chestnut Hill Reservoir, cardigans, Autumn, and all the Boston classics: Boston Pops on the 4th of July, the MFA, the Red Sox.  Shawn is the son of two police officers and a proud uncle to three.  He was raised in the Roman Catholic tradition, discovered New England Protestantism in college, has deeply explored the Anglican liturgy and will be ordained in the UCC on October 4th.  Please reach out and introduce yourself to Shawn as we look forward to an exciting year together!  He can be reached at shawn@kings-chapel.org.

This Sunday's Guest Preacher: Rev. Steven Neville
Reverend Steven Neville is a native of the Roxbury section of Boston, Massachusetts. He is the son of Jeanette Neville and Richard Wood. He was educated in the Boston Public School System where he graduated from the Boston Latin School with the class of 1980. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Dartmouth College in 1984 and a Master of Arts in Theological Studies from Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary in 1989.

Rev. Neville is very much a product of the ministry of the church. His earliest understandings of God were formed in her Sunday School classes. His appreciation of the power of worship was established in her pews. He came to faith and church membership in response to the gospel preached from her pulpits. He formed his personal and social values under the tutelage of her Christian education. He came to acknowledge and exercise his spiritual gifts, first, in her programs. In sum, the foundations for the entirety of Steven's life were divinely constructed through the operations of the Lord's Church.

Steven was licensed to preach in September of 1987. He has served as an associate minister with Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Brockton, MA and Butler Street Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia and Zion Hill Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia where he was ordained in July of 2001. He also worked as the interim pastor for the Redemption Community Church in East Point, Georgia and as assistant pastor at Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Brockton, MA.

Most recently Steven is working as a special assistant to the chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Boston, where he is also a candidate for the doctorate of education degree.

Steven presently resides in the Foxboro with his beloved wife of 25 years, Yolanda and three sons, Stephan, Malcolm and Jaris.

News from the Parish House: Welcoming Simon Pilecki to the Front Desk
Simon Pilecki Administrative Assistant, introduction to congregation
The weeks to come will bring many changes our way as we welcome a busier season to the Parish House.  Jessica Stewart, who has been King's Chapel's Administrative Assistant since May of 2012 will no longer be staffing the front desk, though you will still be able to find her leading tours of the church and verging events from time to time.  We hope for any of you who have worked with Jess in the last several years that you may find time to thank her for her steady service to King's Chapel through many transitions of staff and leadership.  On behald of the staff, I want to say a great big, "Thank You, Jess!"  We are so glad she will be staying with us as a member of the guide staff.

Next week Simon Pilecki will be training under Jess to take on his new role as Administrative Assistant.  He graduated from Emmanuel College this past May, with a bachelors degree in International Relations and a double minor in Communications and Theology. Simon is a native of nearby Lynn, Massachusetts, and brings much enthusiasm to the King's Chapel team.  We are pleased to welcome him aboard!

Some of Simon's hobbies include taking long walks, spending time with friends, and traveling long distances when he is able to find the time. Of particular interest to Simon is India, where he studied abroad in the Spring of 2013, and forged lots of great friendships which have held strongly thanks to Facebook, Email, and WhatsApp. He hopes to be able to visit again soon, and looks forward to finding another nook in the world where he may crawl into and regain that sense of discovery.   As we all get to know Simon this Fall, we hope that you will come by the Parish House to introduce yourselves to the new face behind the Front Desk.

Labyrinth Walk  and Potluck Lunch at the Perkinses, Saturday September 27th, 10:30am-1:30pm
Come for a quiet, meditative walk in the Labyrinth that Cynthia and Dick Perkins have built on their beautiful property in Stow, about 45" from KC. Labyrinths are ancient contemplative settings, and unlike a maze, you cannot get lost. Rather, the object is to mindfully follow the one path, and it always leads to the Center where you may find an answer, where you may find you leave a worry behind.

RSVP to Cynthia Perkins, cbhperkins@earthlink.net. Let her know what you'd like to bring for lunch, and whether you can offer a ride or need one. We'll arrange carpools.

Community Action Committee: Upcoming Service/Learning Opportunities
When was the last time you did some hands-on volunteer service? As we enjoy a relaxing summer, perhaps you'll think about making a commitment now to a few hours of active service in September. Active service helps us learn and refreshes our spirits, different from giving money or service to our own church or personal interests. Contact Amy Meyer for more information about opportunities to participate in Community Action events this fall.

Accessibility and Hearing Assists
Our beautiful Georgian sanctuary designed by Peter Harrison and completed in 1754, has been lovingly maintained by the congregation since its completion.  Some of the box pews have been made wheel-chair accessible.  Ushers are available to assist those who are wheelchair-bound to those pews.

Many of us have trouble hearing in our sanctuary, which does not have amplification.  Small hearing devices are available; an usher also will be happy to provide one, and explain how they work.

The Book of Common Prayer According to the Use in King's Chapel is the cornerstone of worship at our 11 am Morning Prayer Services.  Printed orders of service including hymns, Psalms, and responsive sections of the Prayer Book liturgy are available to facilitate participation in worship for everyone.
