Letter from the Chair

IEEE is witnessing a revolution within its organization; we are seeing the rise of a growing volunteer community committed to the application of technology for development and solving local problems - what has traditionally been identified within IEEE as Humanitarian Activities. What started as a handful of volunteers has grown into a significant community with potentially high-impact initiatives such as conferences, highly focused technology development efforts, and structured local volunteer networks.

Welcome to SIGHT!

Greetings, Colleagues! We are excited to bring you the first SIGHT newsletter. 2013 has been a year of explosive growth for us. Here's a peek at what has been going on:

  • We welcomed 29 new SIGHT groups from 13 countries.
  • We held 5 Community Engagement Workshops for 600 participants around the world.
  • We introduced our first SIGHT Educational Tools Webinar.
  • We debuted the first SIGHT Fellowship Program with 7 SIGHT Fellows from 6 countries convening at the Global Humanitarian Technology Conference in San Jose, CA, USA.
  • We awarded 4 SIGHT project grants to promising initiatives.
  • And more!
We would like to give a big thanks to all of our SIGHT volunteers who made this possible!
Spotlight on Madras SIGHT

One of the most active SIGHTs of the year was the Madras Section SIGHT in India.

Read their report to find out how they provided a variety of opportunities for students to start applying engineering to solve social problems.

Can you guess which of their projects scaled up so effectively that it caught the attention of national media and a government sponsor?
