WHAT IS CROWD SOURCING?

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, crowd sourcing is "the practice of obtaining needed services, ideas, or content by soliciting contributions from a large group of people and especially from the online community rather than from traditional employees or suppliers."

At HCE we are blessed to have very generous parents who support us in so many ways through PTA.  The PTA Annual Fund and the Annual PTA Auction solicit contributions from our parents and our community to raise money for their operating expenses for each year.  The operating expenses cover the yearly budgeted items such as field trips, author visits, salaries for our specialist, instructional materials and staff development for teachers, and so much more. There is an article further down this newsletter that tells you how much of the operating expenses go to the different ways PTA supports our school on an annual basis.

There are always things that come up that we need or want that are not covered by the PTA operating expenses or my SBISD budget for our school.  I encourage the teachers to write grants awarded by our Spring Branch Education Foundation, write projects for crowd sourcing sites and to write proposals to our PTA Planning Committee.  (The PTA Planning Committee manages any funds raised above and beyond the PTA operating expenses by accepting proposals from parents and teachers, considering the proposals and recommending which should by funded to our PTA Executive Board. The PTA Executive Board then votes on which to take forward to the  general PTA membership who vote whether or not to fund the recommended proposals.)

Currently this year, as announced in the newsletter last week, we have had 4 crowd sourcing requests fully funded and there are more waiting.  We appreciate your contributions to our projects. You can support these projects by contributing or by posting them on social media and 'getting them out there'.

Our 5th grade teachers are going for the big $5000 grant - woo hoo!  If they are awarded this grant we can't apply for a second on in the spring but, if they don't, we can apply again in the spring.  The Landon B. Short Mini-Grants are not available until May and are awarded early in the school year.  (That's the $750 grant Coach Thompson was awarded this year.)

Thanks for all the ways you support our teachers so they can plan wonderful learning environments and enriching learning opportunities for your children!
AUTHOR VISITS COMING SOON

FOR FIRST GRADE
Blue Willow Bookshop is sponsoring an author/illustrator visit by Adam Rex and Christian Robinson for 1st grade students on Thursday, September 29th, in the HCE Library.  They will talk about the writing and illustrating process as well as their marvelous new book School's First Day of School.
"It's the first day of school at Frederick Douglass Elementary and everyone's just a little bit nervous, especially the school itself. What will the children do once they come? Will they like the school? Will they be nice to him? The school has a rough start, but as the day goes on, he soon recovers when he sees that he's not the only one going through first-day jitters."

VOLUNTEER IN THE LIBRARY

We are looking for volunteers to help our amazing librarian, Ms. Moore, keep our school library running smoothly. Each year, we ask parent volunteers to help with special projects in the library through our Core Volunteer Group or to volunteer to help with checkout as students come to the library throughout the day.

Thank you to all parents who have already signed-up.

If you missed it at Beginning Bonanza, you can email the Library Chair, Charlotte Sherwood-Moore, at csherwood@sbcglobal.net and provide your child's teacher name and grade level. A Sign-up Genius will then be sent out where you can choose times that work best for you.

Please email any questions to csherwood@sbcglobal.net. We hope to hear from you soon!
