The Whiting Foundation Fellowship enables faculty to travel in order to perform research that supports their scholarly activities. Research conducted during the fellowship tenure should contribute to enhanced teaching. The Foundation supports faculty from all research domains.

In 2014, the Foundation awarded 34 fellowships out of a pool of about 110 applicants. And, they have expressed a preference toward teachers at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Recent award-winning projects included:
  • Travel to Thailand to study the cultural aspects of AIDS transmission;
  • Travel to France to photograph and live within the largest and oldest L'Arche community (an international organization for those living with disabilities);
  • Travel to multiple European cities to explore the history and legacy of conceptual art as it relates to humor and pathos. The faculty member incorporated these contemporary practices into her courses on painting and art-making.
